It's back to turn the key & the solenoid clicks - second or third attempt &
it works.
Continuation of subject on the original posting below.
The problem still exists.
this fault is intermittant - if as Kevin says that it is something to do
with a relay I would like some guidance as to which one and where it is.
Is there a Fiat expert or auto electrician out there who can help?

Many thanks

Steve.

I had a very similar problem with a 92 Ducato 1.9 TD some years ago. On odd
occations the soliniod would click but nothing else. A Fiat main dealer
diagnoised a faulty starter motor and replaced it with two new ones to no
avail. They had it in several times but failed to correct the problem.
I then took the vehicle to a specilist autoelectrician who soon found that
the problem was a intermittent minor relay (Sorry, cant remember the details
of which one) and cured the problem for something around a tenner.

The solenoid is sticking, strip and oil is the best method but if you don't
know how to do it give it to an auto-electrician He will probably charge
£20, although he may replace the solenoid, which is £10. The problem is not
related to 1.9's but to Motorhomes in general, we call it SVS Stood Vehicle
Syndrome, where vehicles are left in a field for six months and then things
start to seize. Other problems include seized brake shoes, cables, calipers
etc.

Don't think oiling is recommended - a good clean should do it. But if it's
corrosion of the armature that is causing it to stick it's a short term
solution.

Would a regular squirt with WD 40 help or will it antagonise the situation??

As with everything WD40 does, it might be a short term 'solution'.

In my bitter experience it antagonises it badly (it'll help briefly) as it
just sticks crap in their. Strip it & clean it.

Not generally a good idea...it just attracts the dirt.

Check the plug and socket connections behind the instrument panel as
they can become intermittent. I had to separate and clean the relevant
one about every couple of months. Symptoms were exactly as described.
