I have a 1992 sierra estate 2.0i just recently i had a new head gasket put on
and the mechanic told me that only one of the fans was working but this would
be ok(lower fan) . Two days ago my car started overheating again , after
looking i found that the cooling fan that had been working has now stopped, but
not ceased I have checked the fuses and they are ok.
has anyone got any ideas where I go from here as having already spent £650 on
the car two months ago dont want to spend much more
thanks

Is it over heating when driving or only when stopped, the fans are only for
when there is no airflow through the radiator.
if its when stopped then sure sounds like a fan problem either run power
direct to the fans or try jumping the thermoswitch on the side of the
radiator to see if they will spin, if they spin when jumping the switch then
this is most likely your problem.

Having owned a couple of 2L DOHC Sierra's in the past and had trouble with
the colling fans I would suggest, making sure they are BOTH working. I ran
mine for a while on one fan, which is ok until you are stuck in traffic on a
warm day! Worth getting a decent one from a scrappie (check it first before
buying), I got one last year for a fiver. Note that some later Escort fans
fit the Sierra's.
Mind you, as ajsmith said in an earlier posting, the fan will only kick in
when there is no airflow through the engine bay (ie the car is stationery).
If when tested, the fans (or fan) turn out to be ok, then the 'fan switch'
maybe faulty. These only cost about a tenner from Ford.

Hope this helps.

Do you mean "seized" as in jammed/stuck/frozen or "ceased" which is just
another word for stopped?

I have checked the fuses and they are ok.

I'm amazed that any car would overheat in this weather anyway. On the hottest
day this summer my XR2i managed quite happily in a 10 mile traffic jam on the
M25 with out a fan at all - I just needed to put the heater on every now and
then and blast it out of the windows. The fan got dumped earlier in the year
when the motor seized and I never got round to replacing it. If anything the
car seems happier without the thing. The shroud round it was blocking so much
of the airflow through the radiator that the two things were cancelling each
other out. The fan was only needed because of the shroud that held it. Weird
but true it seems. In this weather the last thing my car needs is a fan.

Anyway - if you're overheating while on the move in this weather then either
the radiator is blocked solid, the thermostat is jammed shut or the system is
not pressurising. The fans shouldn't enter into it.

If you're overheating in traffic but fine when the car is moving then the fan
control temp sensor is possibly kapput. The fan relays on Sierras are known to
be dodgy too. The one I fixed for a friend was hidden behind the glovebox as I
recall.
