Fiesta 1.8 Diesel (Non Turbo)
R Reg 74000 miles

I bought this car a couple of months ago and It has very quickly
deteriorated.

Firstly I noticed it was difficult to start but putting my Clutch and
Accelerator down solved this. Starting first time.

Then I found that it was starting to struggle getting up hills and
smoking when I applied any torque. I dismissed this as being part of
owning a diesel. But now it smokes when I accelerate and will not go
up even the flattest hills in more than second gear.

I apply the accelerator and black smoke pours out the back. If i
manage to get the revs to increase significantly the exhaust instantly
stops smoking and you get an incredible burst of speed.

I am in the process of having it looked at by my mechanic but he is
stumped at the moment. He has checked for cracked pipes, cleared the
exhaust, filter and put some injector fluid in, this does not appear
to have helped.

He suspects the injectors, pistons or pump. A diesel specialist has
got another fiesta with the same problem and he is waiting to see if
they come up with a solution.

I thought I would try to get some help on the internet but I cant seem
to find anyone with the same symptoms.

Thankyou in advance
Ellis

ok, It is in the mechanics already
he is stumped as mentioned

air filter has been changed
exhaust has been checked
anything simple has been done

with exception to one thing which I have just found
the EGR valve seems to be kicking about in peoples answers to the same
symptoms
I havent spoken to my mechanic about that yet, because his phone is
off

Is there a quick check he can perform to see if its this?

a diagnostic check should show this up as a fault. removing it and blanking
it off will quickly show if it is making a major difference

Get the injectors pressure tested, it sounds like a sticky one & that's
cheap.

From a distance, I would be looking at a collapsing intake pipe that is
starving the engine of air 90% of the time.

Otherwise carefully check the throttle switches and temp sensor on the
injector pump which control the EGR. I would mechanically disable (with a
tin plate) anyhow.

My first guess would of been EGR valve.
Easiest way to disable it is to pull the vaccum hose of between the EGR
valve and solenoid valve, and blank the hose on the solenoid side with a
bolt/screw.
Although if it's stuck open, you may have to make up a blanking plate for
under the EGR valve itself, but usually just disconnecting it stops the
black smoke problems.

IIRC
it is usually on the top rear of the engine on the right (close to the brake
master cylinder)

If you have the grey plastic 'bunch of bananas' inlet manifold, then it wont
have EGR, if its a cast alloy intake, then it has.
