Hi All,

I decided to replace the clutch on my Rover 214, myself a couple of days
ago. How difficult can it be, I've got all the tools, the Haynes manual and
a couple of days to do it in....no problem (I thought).

Well those two days are up and I still haven't managed to get the gearbox
off yet.

They say a bad workman always blames his tools well, in this case I'm going
to blame rusted nuts and the Haynes manual. The rusted nuts were cured by
lots of swearing, WD40, blowtorch and molegrips. The Haynes manual is the
biggest hindrance in doing the job by far.

Problem number 1: trying to locate the plastic nut securing the reverse
interlock cable to the top of the gearbox housing. I have loooked all over
the engine but can't find anything resembling said cable.
Problem Number 2: The starter motor has decided to weld itself onto the
gearbox housing. I've hit it, I've tried to prise it off. End result, the
gearbox is coming off with the starter motor still in place.
Problem number 3: (and the reason I'm writing this) in 10 words Haynes tells
me to "release the driveshaft inner constant velocity joints from the
gearbox". What the hell does this mean. I've prised out the inner CV joints
from the gearbox by about 20mm and there it stays, it will come no further.
My question....Do I have to competely remove both driveshafts (ie. attempt
to loosen the main wheel nut and then extract both driveshafts completely
from the car) or can the clutch be changed with both driveshafts in out by
20mm. Have I missed something plainly obvious here. Any help would be
appreciated

Thanks

1/ later cars dont have the cable theres two different gear boxes. Do you
have to lift a ring to get reverse, or just move the lever down from 5th?

2/ one of the bolts is still in somewhere for sure.

3/ Basically yes , you have to remove the drive shafts completely from the
gearbox, try undoing the bottom ball joints which should give you a bit
more room to seperate the driveshafts from the gearbox.

No.3, I'll totally agree with this. Me and my mate changed the clutch and
gearbox on my 214 a couple of months back and you do need to remove both
driveshafts. As Steve said, removing the bottom ball joints helps loads.

I'll be changing the clutch and gearbox on my 414 probably in the next few
months - please post your results here!
