I've got a Renault Clio 1994
Can anyone tell me how the automatic transmission oil can possibly be
escaping into the engine oil.
I know it sounds daft but I've carefully checked and I'm losing from the
gearbox and gaining in the engine in significant amounts.
Thanks
David
It is possible if you have the 3 speed auto, it is impossible if you have
the 4 speed version, which one do you have?

Ok, here's the deal........there is a device attached to your transmission
called a vacuum modulator, the diaphragm inside it is perforated, ie the
modulator is knackered. You may also have noticed that the part/medium
throttle upshifts are now harsher than they used to be. The modulator is
operated by a rubber pipe connected to the engine intake manifold, the
perforation is allowing transmission oil to be sucked into the intake, it
makes it's way from there into the engine via the engine breather
connection. You can change the modulator in situ, it's a little awkward
though as space around it is limited, the replacement will also need to be
calibrated to set the shift feel. I can sell you a replacement for 20 quid
plus VAT and shipping, E me or call if you want to proceed. Regards.

Doesn't this cause clouds of smoke from the exhaust? I can't for the life
of me see how the transmission oil could find its way into the engine sump.

Ordinarily, yes, you would expect to see excess exhaust plumes, maybe the
chap did'nt notice or just forgot to mention it in his original post.
Secondly, I assume the trans oil is getting into the engine oil pan by way
of the block breather, I cant remember off the top of my head where the
breather is located, or the setup on this model Clio in relation to the
vacuum connection for the modulator, further enquiries required to give a
definite answer on that one (might mean waiting to get another one in for
repair). Anyway, the Gent took up my offer of a new modulator and I walked
him through the fitting procedure, I'll drop him a line shortly and see how
he got on, I'll post an update after that. Regards.

Many years ago, the SD1 modulator valve went when I was crossing
Battersea Bridge one Saturday night - Chelsea Cruise night - mega traffic.
Clouds of smoke from the exhaust - I didn't know what had happened.
I called the RAC. He pronounced a hole in a piston, and arranged for a tow
home. Rather short of money, I thought I'd have a look inside before
looking for a secondhand engine. Took the top of the plenum chamber off
and it was full of red oil. 'Twas Duckhams in the sump.
