Hi,

Can anybody help. I have a Vauxuall Astra 1.6 Expression (1996- 87000
miles) and over the past 6 months I have had the oil sump gasket replaced
twice. Checking underneath today it is leaking again and it was onpy
replaced a fortnight ago. The garage said the next time it goes (half
expecting it to) then the sump pan will need replacing even though they
can't find anything wrong with the pan. So the question is, is this a
common fault, the pan needs replacing, the gasket is crap, or they just
don't know what they are doing.

Any advice is appreciated before I go after them tomorrow.

Andrew.

Could be that the sump is a bit bent - they don't always go back on
properly. How much are they quoting - it's just a bit of thin stamped
steel? OTOH, Vauxhall (and a lot of other) garages often don't know
what they're doing...

The Vauxhall garage said that they couldn't find anything wrong with the
sump the last time the gasket went but said that if the gasket went again
then the sump would need replacing. Last time the gasket was lightly
covered in oil, this time it is seeping all over the road. The car has only
done 200 miles since the last leak. I'm abit suspicious because I have a
Corsa that is also showing the same symptoms after a oil seal change along
with the sump gasket. The sump gasket is also starting to look oily on this
car as well.

Thanks anyway. I think the cost of the sump is around 30 pounds plus labour
and cost of new gasket so it will be around 80-100 pounds.

Andrew.

Hi,
are you sure that it is the sump? The Astra has a habit of leaking from the
front of the engine between the block and the oil pump casting. This leaks
just above the sump gasket. You can sometimes see where the gasket has
pushed out from behind the pump casting.
Hope this is of help,
John
