Mondeo MK2 handbrake adjustment?

Mondeo Mk2 2.0 zetec 2000 model (X reg) rear drums. HBOL reckons
there's no adjustment necessary as it's all automatic, and whilst the
auto -adjust does seem to click and worked as we replaced shoes, it
isn't actually taking up all the old slack and the lever now pulls up
way to far for comfort and doesn't hold on the slightest hillock!
Is it time for a new cable/set of cables, or is there any adjustment
available by other means?

Make sure the metal-thing-with-a-ratchet-that-sits-between-the-shoes
is installed properly. Mine was not and I had the same problem when I
did new shoes on my Mk2 (p reg 2.0l) about a year before it finally
got scrapped. At first I had the same thing, I could NOT get the hand
brake to work. Eventually I went back into the drums, stripped them
down, checked everything and rebuilt them. From then on they worked
perfectly.
It'll be the metal-thing-with-a-ratchet-that-sits-between-the-shoes,
I'll bet you a pint of Tangle Foot.
