Hi
First time posting...

I got a Ford Starcraft from a v old guy in Bolton, came accross it on ebay.

Now on the way home, i lost 1st gear, then lost all gearing, so i belive its
the clutch, as when engine is off i can select all gears fine, even if i did
the clutch with th engine off, select 1st, but when i lift the clutch i cant
dip it and get 2nd..

Now the local car group i mentioned it in (as it was suposed to be a 2.3
diesel) said it would be a pug also used in the Sierra (never had a pug or
ford before) but when i went to the local car spares the engine number didnt
match, now they say it could be from a Scorpio 2.5

Anyway heres the engine number.
KJ25943A ST196535(or3)

Would anyone know what it actually is?

The old man i got it off, said it was 1 of 3 built by starcraft, as its not
a Q plate..he said he had spoken to someone in a club some time ago.

I had a VW T3 camper which i brought over from Germany a few months ago,
then just before leaving for a Euro trip got hit by a very drunk Citylink
driver
http://www.thestar.co.uk/news/Crash-ruins-holiday-plan.4050687.jp

Had a look on ebay and saw the starcraft...had seen one on ebay last year so
knew basicly what it was.

The old man was really into country and western, so had eagles and yank
license plates all it, but was a nice vehicle, but only did 400 miles in the
last year as he was knocking on a bit and had trouble with his leg.

Its ideal for me, her and the dog around Europe, i like quirky things...

Google didnt help much...

Whats the general view on startcraft, how much was the kit etc..and how many
are about?

any pointers greatfully recieved!

Hi Jules

The Starcraft was designed by Jim McIntyre (of Spartan fame) in his factory
in Pinxton, Nottinghamshire I picked up a Spartan there in 1976!! (built it
and ran it for 15 years!!) very bright guy, but you should have seen his
factory!!
Apart from the Triumph and later a cortina based Spartan, there was also
a cortina based Sherwood Estate.

Now IIRC the P100 (cCortina based pick up built in/for the South African
market ) had the option of the diesel 2.3 Peugeot lump, some Cortinas and
the Granada from the 80's had it fitted, certainly the early Sierra P100
had it.

So I wonder if your Starcraft was maybe based on the Cortina P100 pickup.

Some info
http://www.btinternet.com/~spartanownersclub/new.htm

and there is an owners club!!
http://www.kit-cars.com/public_html/clublist.htm

Some info on the Company that built it
http://www.spartanownersclub.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,8.msg8.html#msg8

Hope this is of some use

Hi Des
Thanks, made a post on the Spartan one.

Its a Mk5 cortina, i know what a P100 looks like and its def not one of
those

Going to have the clutch removed and see what info is printed on the clutch
plate, it does seem there is another set of numbers stamped lower on the
block but cant read em...

Im now sure if to leave it all white or paint it something differant...

The temp gauge doesnt work, so just looking where it should connect on the
block..

Its a damn noisy engine, and there isnt much sound proofing!

Jules

As it is the Peugeot 2.3 diesel it was also fitted to Leyland daf vans,
Peugeot 505/4 , Ford Granada, Sherpa etc etc!! I wonder if the Starcraft
kept the original Cortina chassis number (easier to register in the 80's pre
SVA test) that would be a better bet than engine numbers

Identification of engines. Basic code letters and numbers will identify what
capacity the engine. The letters are usually found cast into the cylinder
head behind the no. 2 injector.

Though more likely the engine and gearbox came from an early sierra, once
you have the pressure plate and clutch removed it will become as clear as
mud!

Probably the same as the Peugeot book with name change!!

IIRC Temp gauge sendor is at the front of the engine by the thermostat
housing?

ah cheers, the V5 says Starcraft, rather than a kit car etc, but never had a
kit car before, or a Ford, or a Diesel :-)

ah, i presumed the block, as being a Toyota fan for years, you can pop a
twin cam on the same block on a standard model

yes, hoping to take it out tomorrow.

The guy at the car spares couldnt match the numbers i found to Ford or Pug,
and had to specially order the couple he thought it would be, so couldnt
return the one i didnt need..

will take a look cheers, the found the dip stick, right at the back corner
and a pain to get too, or more rightly put back in...oh, never seen a dip
stick like this, doesnt seem to have a easy max min. has some curves cut
out in a couple of places
