Went to register my latest brand new acquisition at Maidstone VRO the other day
and was given a sheet of paper and an appointment time to drive the car
(without plates)to them so as they could inspect it. Showed up at appointed
time to be met by nice man with clipboard and DVLA day glow yellow jacket who
walked round the car, asked a couple of questions and then took me into the
office and processed my V55 whilst I waited.

Nuffin to worry about. (as long as you have the car)

Glad to hear this !!

I am due to collect my car in early January and phoned my VRO in Ipswich to ask
about "pre-registering" my car i.e. before I got it, on the suggestion of my
Ford dealer in Belgium.

In the course of the conversation with the VRO, I was informed that I couldn't
drive my car to the inspection, I would have to get a car trailer or
transporter !

Anyone any thoughts or news on this ?

I also took it that pre-registration was not possible, althought the dealer
seems adamant and even pointed me to this newsgroup for evidence. I've yet to
find any in the 2000+ postings !

As far as I'm aware, you can ask the VRO to come to you for an inspection.
The handbook and registration docs also ask you to state the address where
they may inspect it. I think they would be very unreasonable to expect you
to take the car to them.

Despite what many people will tell you, you CANNOT legally pre register an
import vehicle. I know the big import companies circumvent this but as a
private individual, the dvla may take action against you if such action
comes to light. Some have got away with it but that doesn't meanit is
allowed.

There are some rules for independent import companies who can show DVLA their
competence of registration and Certificate of Conformity paperwork and
proceedures. I was going to see if I could get the approval for myself but as
I
only import about 20 vehicles a year it did not seem worth the hassle.

I used a transport company to transport 5 Focus Estates that I bought in
Belgium a couple of months ago and submitted the paperwork to the local VRO
about 3 days before the cars actually arrived - big sweat on when local office
said they would like to inspect one of the cars - gave me 4 days notice which
removed the problem. Had a letter from local office confirming appointment and
telling me that I was entitled to drive to the VRO plateless provided the car
was insured. I still have the letter somewhere so don't take any bull about
trailers etc. Good Luck.

This is bollocks! Quote their own documentation at them:

"After arrival you are only entitled to drive the vehicle on foreign
registration plates from the port of entry to your home address, place of
destination or to a pre-arranged test. "

See http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/exptimpt.htm#IMPORTING%20A%20VEHICLE
for more info.

Some commercials can do it. It's discussed in the same doc quoted above.

The VRO in Ipswich are complete bar stewards who will give you grief
just because they can. The chap I used to do my import said they are
the most awkward in the country.
