Can any one out there give me any info on a Moss Motor car.

It appears to be a Herald 13/60 chassis and running gear with a mock
racing car glass fibre body.

Do Moss Motors still exist ?
How many were made ?
How much are they worth ?
Any other info I need before I buy the one round the corner ?

Moss started up in '81 producing a Morganesque roadster, and went on till
'85 producing three cars until taken out by a factory fire. As of a couple
of years ago, they were still produced by a trio of Moss Owners Club
members: try the kit car magazines for an address. Pricing probably highly
variable, but you can pick up pre-'60 specials for under a grand, so I'd
be wary of going much over that.

From the description, it sounds like a Moss Monaco- looks vaguely like a
Connaught racer from the '50s.

Moss Motors I understand went bust, but the is an Owners Club which owns
the rights for the cars.

In kit car terms quite a few Monacos were made, I don't have the details
to hand, but just over a 100 jumps out of my memory- someone give me the
correct figure.

As to value, kit cars are very hard to price, generally as a builder you
would be lucky to get your parts cost back, it is unlikely to be worth
more than the Herald doner, say £500-£2000. A really well built one
could be worth more.

As for things to check, build quality, wiring and the state of the
chassis leap to mind. A friend of mine has a Moss Malvern based on a
Vitesse which looks lovely, but the loom is in a terrible state and when
purchased all of the suspension bushes were shot.

Ford RS2000- see if it looks like that. (Incidentally it is called a
Monaco since it is supposed
to look vaguely like a Cooper Monaco not a Connaught). I have been told
my car looks
like a cigar tube on wheels

In the cowl there was the address of who built my car (not Moss) but that
firm does not exist anymore either

Malvern) and I had a feeling that including these about 300 were made but
I may be wrong

Mine is insured for 2000 (3rd party insurance is 121 pounds)

on the negative battery terminal, my car goes extremely well, steers well
and stops well. wings etc do rattle though.
sounds good too- there is BSA goldstar silencer on it
You need 2 aero screens and mud flaps else you get muddy.
Somethings are very inaccessible- it is a pig to check the brake fluid
since there is not alot room to take the top off.
I am dreading
the day I need to take the engine out since I think the body will
have to be dismantled
I have broken 2 throttle cables and you need to be good at headstands and
small spaces to fix it
I have also got through two steering racks but the camber of the wheels
is abit extreme
you also need more padding in the seats else you will get a numb bum
after an hour
rear suspension abit hard
the speedo is also very inaccurate
I dont know how a Herald kit compares with a Ford kit or what proportion
were made of each.
its great fun to have and you will enjoy it. I have had mine for about 6
years
