Does anyone know if it is possible to swap the engine and box in a
Morris Minor Series II (803cc A Series) with another A series engine,
perhaps the 1098cc or the 1275cc, while still retaining the 'long'
gear stick? By this I mean keep the direct linkage, not using the
remote linkage. I would like to keep the interior originality, but
have some improved performance.
Also, any advice on economy disc break conversions for the Series II
would also be welcome.

Thanks for your help.

I tried to do this some years ago. The 948, 1098 or 1275 cc engine will
all more or less bolt straight in (not the Marina 1275cc engine as this
uses a different 'box and flywheel). The gearboxes are a different
matter.

The "proper" (ie unribbed casing) 948 'box is much like the 803 'box
except it has a remote gearchange. fitting the complete 'box will, I
believe, necessitate some changes to the floorpan and the later style
gearbox cover. Alternatively, and more in line with what you want, you
can simply swap over the extension from the 803 'box onto the 948 'box.
This will fit straight in.

The 1098 'box is rather stronger and can be identified externally by a
ribbed casing. This will fit direct as per the 948 'box and changes to
the floorpan will be necessary. I did get an 803 gearbox extension
machined to fit this 'box but found that it was incompatible with the
selector rods so had to abandon this plan. What was needed, IIRC, was
some sort of modification to the rods which were too long (more than
just shortening them).

I believe, but don't know, that the 1275cc midget 'box is the same
externally as the 1098 'box.

Hope this helps.

I have this arrangement in my '55 Splittie, works well.

PS Don't ask me how it was done, as it was done by my Uncle - and I can't
ask him 'cos he's dead!

The 948 motor will go straight onto the 803 box, I'm not so sure about the
1098 motor as it has a different (shallower) flywheel and clutch to the 803
& 948, if you used the 803/948 flywheel and clutch on the 1098 motor it
would go in for sure -all three engines use the same 4 bolt flywheel to
crank fixing. The suggestion made in a previous post regarding using the 948
gearbox with the 803 tailhousing sounds a good idea - the 803 ratios are
terrible, even by comparison with the ratios in the 948/1098 boxes -the 1275
sprite box has better ratios, but I'm not sure whether you could change
over the tail housing from the 803 box to this (it uses the same maincase
and selectors as the 1098 gearbox)

The options for disks on your car are the converted from Marina hubs that
use Marina calipers and the Marina caliper brackets, the Owen Burton
machined from billet hubs with Escort Mk 3 calipers (much bigger pad area,
and plenty of servicable/repairable donor calipers in the breakers) or one
of the older conversions that use the Sprite front discs and calipers -these
disks and calipers are quite small -any of the conversions will perform
better than the 7" drums you have, but will need a servo to work really well
(unless you have the legs of a sumo wrestler)

Best of luck

I've often wondered if there are any parts of a Morris Minor that would be
of any use to a
Marina enthusiast, it would be nice to have it the other way round for a
change! ;-)

Rear bump stops. Had to fit Marina bump stops to my Minor in the mid
'80s as they were not available for the Minor. Guess the situation has
reversed now, so expect that I'll be fitting Minor bump stops to my
wife's Marina when we eventually get round to the rebuild...
