TR4 oil choice

Can anyone give me a definitive answer on the oil to use in a 62 TR4? I've
run both SAE 30 and 10w-30; I only run the car when it's warm so I don't
really need the split grade oil.

In fact, since I only run when it's warm and my pressure tends to drift down
a bit after long running (about 55-60), I was thinking of a 20w-50 racing
oil.

Opinions?

Back in the days when TR4s were produced, the standard oils
were generally 20W50; unless you're regularly experiencing
temperatures a lot below freezing, i'd suggest you use a
20/50 oil.

10/30 is just too thin for many older engines!

Unless your engine is highly tuned, i'd not think
you would see any benefit from using a race oil;
rather than spending lots of money on expensive oils,
if you want to prolong your engine life, i'd suggest
increasing the frequency of oil-changes (do it, say,
every 3000 miles instead of every 5000).

Thanks. I only mentioned racing oil since that's how I see 20w-50 usually
billed.

I agree with the previous posting 20W/50 of good make is the one to use.

I am using Morris' of Shrewsbury Magnol 20w/50 quality at a reasonable cost.

Incidently I have read something by one of 'the experts' that semi
synthetic or fully synthetic oils should never be used in a standard TR4
engine.

I've been using Penrite in my Spitfire (1147cc recent new engine - not due
to oil failure!) and GT6 (1998cc, 95000 miles - no loss of oil pressure) and
had no problems with it. It does not seem to break down in composition
between changes. I'm happy with it, and there is a supplier of it very close
to me so I can easily get it. I don't suppose that there is much between
this and any of the other 'classic' 20/50's about, but definitely an
improvement over unbranded or supermarket 20/50's.
