Just Bought a 1974 Hillman Imp. Does anybody know what wheels from other
cars fit? Mine still has cross-plies on, very scary & I'd like to change
them, possibly going upto 13" rims & wider tyres. Many thanks,
Colin

IIRC, Mini, Metro and Early Vivas should all fit.

It's 4" PCD, so Viva, early Chevette and some BMC wheels will fit.
Metro ones have the right PCD but are far too inset, so they aren't much
use. Don't be tempted to try to fit 100mm PCD wheels (FIAT?) because
although they might seem to fit, you'll be bending the studs and they
will eventually break!

4 stud 4 inch PCD with 7/162 UNF studs -- BMC and Vauxhall both used 4
inch pcd but BMC used 3/8" studs.

Why the prejudice against cross plys the 600x12" Avon Wide Safety was the
most sought after tire on the really quick sprint and hill climb Imps. An
Imp Sport will out corner just about any modern car short of a MGF best
advice is stick a back of
sand in the front to improve the motorway stability. Standard mods were to
lower the car on to Sport/Coupe springs or the famous "Monte Carlos" fit an
adjustable track rod on the driverside (to remove bump steer) and fit an
anti-roll bar from a Hunter.
What you can't do is fit tall wide 13 inch tire anything over 55% profile
fouls the front door hinges and require much work on the front lower door
hinges in addition to the arches.
This only applies if the car is a MK2 a Mk1 is best left alone as to lower
one lower than a standard Mk2 causes colossal bump steer and the track rods
can jam between the body and the wishbones under breaking. Early (pre 1966)
steel wheels are also not suitable for radial tyres unless the car had the
"SP tyre option" from the factory.

Incidentally I just realised your car is a 1974 by 74 all Imps already came
from the factory on 155x12 (155/82x12) radial (either Goodyear or Dunlop)

FWIW, crossplies in themselves are not the problem, more the size of the
xplies fitted. Do a web search on it; many race/rally cars use
crossplies.

Chevette used 100mm pcd --- many things look the same between Chevette and
Viva but have subtle changes.
