Just when I thought I'd got in my other halfs good books by selling on my
Somerset (Saturday), next day (Sunday) I go and find (then buy) a Pop
powered Ashley Sportiva (1172cc). Has anyone got any literature or anything
on these unusual machines?? I've got a reasonable idea of what most of it is
made from mechanically, but am curious about things like front & rear
screens - are they taken from a normal saloon of the era? Its quite a nice
spec, and haven't seen a carb setup like this before (or if I have I've
forgotten!) - are they early SUs? the float chamber covers have SU on them,
but I've not noticed dashpots of this shape/size before .. can anyone shed
any light on what model no. they are? Also interesting remote gearchange
mech (still 3 speed), telescopic front springs/dampers, alternator etc..

Any info etc appreciated .. to see what I've talking about, have a look
here:

http://www.1950sspecials.com/ashley1.htm has some info for starters, based
on a quick search.

cheers

I have an Ashley bodyshell cut into 4, which I bought just for the bonnet,
which was a Sabre Six one. The Reliant Sabra, Sabre Four and Six were
developed from the last Ashley bodies.

As far as I know, they all used the windscreen from a Meadows Frisky, ( a
wierd 3-wheeler based on a motorcycle engine. You can find some pics on my
site in the bulletin-board section, see report on Bovingdon 2001).

I have had a batch of 10 windscreens made up for the Sabres, Meadows, and
any other cars such as the Ashleys.

The rear screeen is something else again. I have one glass rear screen in
my Sabre Six, and one perspex screen for the second Sabre Six when I get
round to rebuilding it. UI think it was unique to the Ashley, but would
like to hear anything to the contrary.

BTW if you are in Portland Dirset then I'm in the same county. Might be
worth you coming up sometime.

I've seen pictures of carbs like this before. I think they are basically
SU, but the dashpots seem to be peculiar to Aquaplane. Don't know if they
are still in business.

For Aquaplane parts and some of the engine bits, try Vintage SUpplies in
Norfolk

I disposed of a triumph-based Sportiva a year or two ago, yours looks
nicer. Does it have the 3 speed box? If so, it is probably capable of
vicious acceleration in the 0-40 mph band :-)

Looks and proportion are in the E type class, though.
