Can anybody give me any advise as to go about wiring my N type socket
for my towbar on my X reg year 2000 Jimny, I am putting in an audible
relay and need to know which side of the vehicle to go into the wiring
as I have no wiring diagrams or colour references, The proper Suzuki
towbar wiring harness costs over £50 so I assume for that kind of
money it must plug into a pre-wired socket somewhere. Can anybody help
please?

I put a towbar on mine using the Suzuki loom for the electrics.

The Suzuki loom has a number of in-line sockets. You have to take off
the two rear light units and unplug the connectors. You then plug them
back via a short bit of new loom which also takes off the relevant power
feeds to go to the trailer socket.

The new flasher unit plugs into the old flasher socket with a flying
lead, so you have to find a suitable place to mount the new (larger)
flasher. A LED on a flying lead acts as the extra indicator lamp to
show that the trailer is connected properly. You need to drill a hole
in one of the spare switch positions to mount this.

BTW, Is a workshop manual available yet from anywhere for the Jimny?

Thanks Chris! for this info i was hoping not having to go to the
seemingly expensive suzuki loom but it might be the quickest & safest
in the long run, Did you run into any other problems ie fitting the
towbar Ive not got my (Towsure) towbar yet but understand it just
bolts onto the bracket on the end of the chassis,Ive also got an old
SJ410 with towbar and the mountings on it are simular but it has got a
brace that clamps round the chassis on one side and i am wondering if
the jimny bracket will be the same.

No i havn't seen a Workshop manual for the jimny either Ive got one
for the SJ but im not to impressed with it.

Fitting the factory towbar itself was really simple. As you say, it
picks up on holes already in the chassis.

Clearance is a bit tight on the exhaust pipe in one place, but I've had
no problems.

Why don't you buy a 12 v Test ing screw driver. this has a buld in it.
Umplug the connecter from the tail light and switch on the side lights.Clip
one end of the testing screw driver to the chassis and probe the plug untill
you find the one that lights the testing screw driver. Then using
"Scotlocks" (blue plasic clip that clips arount the wire) link in a tow ball
wiring loom available pre wired from any caravan or trailer shop. can get
them with a buzzer.

For heaven's sake don't allow cheap and nasty 'Scotchlocks' anywhere
near automotive wiring, especially on a 4x4 that might get wet. They
are wiring loom destroyers! (either by partially cutting through the
wire, or by letting moisture under the insulation.

Thanks Andy & Chris
Ive got a 12v tester and have wired up other towbars in the past, Its
just that ive just bought the Jimny and its got another year to run on
the warranty and i didnt want to do anything to comprimise that, But
after call today to my local suzuki dealer they say that they dont use
the suzuki harness (I guess because of the price) unless specificly
asked but wire straight into the lighting curcuits.
So ill have a poke around the lights with my tester.

My local Suzuki dealer said the same thing when I got the towbar for my
Vitara. The Suzuki loom is worth the money though, it'll pay for itself with
reliability, I wouldn't use Scotchloks on anything. Also I recommend packing
all the electrical connectors with Vaseline, especially if you're going
offroad in it.

Towbar has arrived one of the side hanger has been bent in transit
could be bent back but could comprimise stength also the tow ball tube
holes do not line up with the holes on the tow cross member (half an
hole out!) I'm not a happy chappy! Ill have to ring them tommorrow to
get it changed.
