Need some help please

I have a 97 Swift Challenger with Carver's Fanmaster heating. Checked the
van on Monday and found that the 12v fan was not working.

Checked the obvious (power, fuses etc) and all Ok

Dug a bit deeper and found that mains elements all OK, and 12 volts getting
to c/board on back of heater. When I checked the power going into the actual
motor I got 0 volts.

Powered the motor directly with 12 v and it works fine, drawing up to 2
amps.
The motor is connected to the c/board with a removable plug. Once this was
removed the power output from the board was also 12v.

I was confused.

Spoke to an electrical engineer friend, and we now suspect that although the
board is outputting 12v, as soon as a load (motor) is connected, the voltage
drops to 0v.

Traced the board output back to what appears to be a "Darlington pair" BD679
capacitor/diode. The friend though this was the problem and duly asked me to
get a new one. I tried to get one today from maplins - but they only had an
equivalent - a TIP122. This was duly installed. Rushed home, wired up and
guess what? - not working. Now don't even have 12v coming off the board.

Can anyone help??

I believe Craver have been bought over - anyone know who by, and if it is
possible to order spare parts without being ripped off?

Thanks in anticipation

Mark, Carver were bought by Truma but their website is still at
http://www.carvertechnology.com/ where you can email them. I have found them
helpful in the past.

My Fanmaster stopped working. In the end I gave up trying to fix it and
obtained a replacement fan assembly from my dealer (apparently no bits are
available separately). Cost me sixty quid (!) but at least my heating now
works again.

Although Carver have gone under, parts are still available through dealers.

A couple possibilities:
* You don't say whether or not you have tested the module's input
voltage under load. Try wiring a 21W 12V (car indicator or rear fog
light) bulb across the supply and see whether it lights brightly or not.
It could be that you have a high resistance somewhere else in the
supply. If so, your best approach would be to re-fit the original
component (if you still have it) and then check all connections back to
the battery.
* According to the RS Electronics website (http://rswww.com) the BD679
and TIP122 come in different 'packages.' If you've just de-soldered the
old component and fitted the new one so that it looks the same, chances
are that you have your wires crossed! The simplest solution would be to
buy a genuine BD679 - RS are still listing them as available on their
website.

The 'nospam' address is a double-bluff, and any e-mail sent to it should
actually reach me. Failing that, send mail to 'dthornber at' instead.

Good idea. I tried the input voltage under load today - but its fine.

Appear to be the bd679 or another problem on the board. I will try to get
the part locally before I fork out the £40 ish + vat for a replacement
board.

Tried emailing carver as also suggested in this group - but no reply from
them yet.

Thanks for all your help

Hi!
Carver has been taken over by their main competitor Truma. The rest of their
Carver's stock has been bought by www.olearymotorhomes.co.uk/

Thanks - will try them.

I'm not having much luck with Carver or Truma's web sites / email
