Hi Dave

They are referring to the body length ( or should be ). The draw bar is
included when measureing shipping length.

In that sense they will be quoting the body length, in my case 13ft approx,
but makers etc will quote the overall length of 19ft.

The 13' or 4m is normally measured internaly at bed box height (without
the front sill).
e.g. a 13' van will have an external body length of about 14' & shipping
length of about 18'.

Body length is usually measured at the maximum point, this is about bed
height on most vans

The only two that really matter are the internal length and the
shipping length. Internal length is usually measured at bedbox height
fom the front wall of the van to the rear wall of the van. Shipping
length is the distance from the front of the hitch to the farthest
point at the rear of the van.

14" and 17" what caravans are longer than this.
Ferry companies need to know the overall lenth from hitch to end so they
work oiut how to get them on board. We folk rather know what is the length
inside Don' think it will ever be sorted out

I hate to rain on the imperial measurement parade here... but a double-tick
a.k.a. quote (") represents INCHES!!

http://www.woodzone.com/articles/Read_A_Ruler.htm

When I first scanned that I thought I'd come into the wrong newsgroup.

But no, we're taking caravans here a little more than a foot long. The ferry
companies would love that. I can hear the tagline now "It's the ultimate in
folding caravans - a super compact 17 inches from drawbar to rear lights. So
light it fits in the boot of your car when not in use."

Anyone who has seen "This is Spinal Tap" would know the disaster a little
tick can create.

(And all this from the guy who couldn't spell "flies". Oh dear.)

Hi,

I have booked a Red Funnel deal for IOW but car has to be 6.5 and van 6.5.
Total length 13metres. My van is 7.5 metres from the back to the front of
the tow bar.

Is this the correct measurement?

Though my total length is 13metres (6.5+6.5) they still did me for an excess
for having a 7.5m van even though my total length is within their combined
lengths.

I'm 2.7m high and hope I fit on!

Build a tunnel I say!!!...............Mark

Don't say that to the locals when you get there.
They like it as it is, at least the ones I talked to.
They do not want a bridge or a tunnel.

Not strictly true - have a look at uk.local.isle-of-wight, and you'll
find the debate rages on. My parents have lived on the Island for
nearly 40 years, and would LOVE a fixed link - it's so expensive for
them to come over and visit us - or to go shopping in a big town, or
to go to the theatre etc. etc.

We went to France over Easter -= came back St Malo to Portsmouth 8
hours in a force 9 gale - then they had to sit for 3/4 of an hour on
the IoW ferry in the same gale to get home!

Usually the length of vans quoted does not include the towing A frame.
However it is included (known as the shipping length) when you are taking
the van on a ferry.
