Could anyone tell me what is the best make for a caravan, bearing in mind
that the out put should be no more than 700 to 750 watts, which would I
think be 900watts input.

I've seen one in savercenter for Ł39 with 750 watts input but weight was not
shown. forgot the name I think NG.

TIA Mike S

Microwave power I think is generated by a device which includes a strong
large magnet (magnetron device), and I would expect the total weight to
be quite dependant upon this, so they will not come *very* light.

We used to take a basic model away, probably weighs about the same as a
12volt/mains tv.
Hardly used it though. I think they are useful if you don't have a full
oven.
Wouldn't bother with the Ł340 mains/12volt types.

We have a "Remoska" which is available from Lakeland Plastics. It is a very
versatile sort of pan with the heating element in the lid. It will bake
scones, or do bacon & egg, almost anything. Not cheap about £65 but easy to
use.

Is that a microwave?
We have a Tefal mini oven. Looks like a large toaster with drop down glass
door front and back. Non stick cooking tray on top. Two elements
inside, upper and lower. We inherited it from a relative who lived alone and
used it for all her cooking. Have done everything from english breakfast on
top, to roast dinner inside. Max power 1500w. I'd recommend to any
caravanner.Unfortunately I've only seen a similar in Spain- at Ł16.

Hello Mike,

The weight problem is in the mains transformer.
A small 750w unit will weigh about 16Kg
They will draw an INITIAL surge current of approx 7amps.

We take a unit with us every trip and find it very useful.
The one we use in the van is the smallest (physically)
we could find and weighs in at 14Kg.
The smaller the wattage the longer to cook but this is relative
as we are only talking in second/minuites.

There is now an induction microwave made that does away with
the heavy transformer and only weighs about 5-6Kgs and the surge
current is considerable less BUT these are expensive, upwards of £200

IIRC, the power output of a microwave is around half what it draws from the
mains, so you could be looking at 1.5Kw! Asda do some very small microwaves
from £39 upwards - I bought one and found it is just the right size to fit
in one of the cupboards; weight isn't too high, about the same or possibly a
little less than a colour portable TV.

We have a Samsung Sam Junior and it is brilliant. 500W output has never
tripped any breakers and is less than 300mm square. The latest ones can be
found with a built in
inverter

We have used a Matsui 650 watt for many years and have no problem as long as
the amperage available is over 6 amps. it is the starting current that
causes the problem; at 6 amps we have to switch all other appliances off.
It sits on the floor above the axle when travelling and we keep it there
with a sturdy walking stick in front and pack cushions at the sides.

Explorer Group have just started fitting LG (Lucky Goldstar) microwaves into
their Rallye range of caravans. It is a 500W, silver in colour and fits
into overhead lockers. I am in the process of trying to find out where I
can purchase them!

My best efforts have only found a 800W LG, links below;
http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/commerce/command/ExecMacro/ols_prod_detl.d2w/r
eport?prrfnbr=4004497&prmenbr=6970&type=big&thisMode=ols&cgrfnbr=75421
http://www.lge.co.uk/mod_perl/go.pl/site/products/appliances/microwave/solo.
htm
or there's this at 750W
http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/commerce/command/ExecMacro/ols_prod_detl.d2w/r
eport?prrfnbr=4003319&prmenbr=6970&type=big&thisMode=ols&cgrfnbr=75421
at only £40, might be worth a try. Who's going to be the guinea pig?

I got the Argos one which works fine but there could be problems on the
Continent where they tend to have lower amperage hook ups. May be prudent to
turn water heater and space heater off when using to avoid tripping.

microwave ovens that some of you have referred to as being suitable for a
caravan, re weight and electrical loading, are not available AFAICT looking
at various site on the web. Or they are made by some other maufactuer other
than the one they are badged for.

Thanks once again Mike S
