We always use the CCC site at Moffat (non members welcome)its just
2 miles off the A74/M74 and you can get a cheap campers breakfast
at the Moffit Wool Mill shop next door. Also garage next door for fuel.
I know many don't like to use the club sites but when they are close to
the main routes I find them quiet and clean giving us a good nights rest
before the next hike up to Aberdeen or Inverness

Philip - you can stop over at the motorway service area near Gretna -
they have a dedicated area for caravans - costs about £4 for the night
(I think) we stop there whenever we are travelling south.

This is very welcome news, I think it gives out the message that they do not
want you to stay more than two hours. Is it the same for Lorries? Anyway who
in their right mind would want to spend the night on a UK service station?
The parking areas, in most cases, are so close to the motorway it would be
difficult to sleep anyway. Then there is the security issue. Surely if you
are on a long journey you can plan to stop at a proper site en route. If you
are driving such long distances, particularly after a days work, surely the
question of individual fitness to drive comes into the frame at some point.

The most we normaly pay is around £4 (our favorite sites are often cheaper)
and we like these sites better than any of the expensive ones.
BUT... here's a novel one.....
We often travel from the midlands to Scotland on the Friday evening arriving
at the border around midnight, passing by Glasgow in the small hours and
arriving at our first night's stop around 2 a.m. This stop is a petrol
station and we park at the pumps and just drop the rear stays and fall on
the bed for some kip. We get up around 7:30, have some breakfast and wait
for the petrol station to open for business and we fill up.
So, we have our first night free, nobody cares that we park there, the owner
gets a sale of 10 gallons the minute he opens and we start our holiday at
8:00 a.m. Saturday morning, amid beautiful scenery, rested, with a full tank
and belly and able to hit anywhere in Scotland later the same day.
Seems good to us!
BTW the petrol station we use is somewhere between Stirling and Callander,
possibly at Doune on the A84? I should imagine that any petrol station owner
who goes home in the evening would welcome a caravan parked at his pumps all
night and filling up first thing in the morning.
Everyone wins!

Where does this 540 miles take you from and to, exactly? We tour Scotland a
lot and may be able to swap info.
