My camper engine has got some problems and wondered if anyone has any ideas
or suggestions?

Its been very difficult starting for about a three weeks but drove perfectly
once I got it running. Its got worse in the past two days and now it dies if
I try and rev it above tick over. I ran it for over an hour at tick this
evening in case air had got into the system, but it still won't rev and tick
over often falters for a moment and then comes back to normal again. It
recently had an MOT and the emissions test was ridiculously low at 0.21%.
Last year when it was running ok it was 0.9%.

I've also noticed some white smoke when I remove the oil filler cap. I know
on a petrol this indicates worn rings/valve guides, but is this also bad
news for a diesel?

Any ideas what this might be (however wild or obvious) much appreciated as I
am stuck.

When the fuel is pumped into the pistons at tick over it does not require
much fuel to sustain tick over, but on load it does. I had a leak in the
filter (crack) and because the fuel line was transperant I could see the
stream of air bubbles. the engine in this case ran irregulary.

Supermarket fuel is the same as Shell, BP, Texaco etc. There is no
difference at all.

Supermarket Diesel and petrol are just the same as sold by other outlets.

On my old Camper I changed, on advice from the Daily Telegraph Motoring from
Asda's to Shell Optimax and got 10% better fuel consumption and much
smoother response and my new one, an oiler, goes better on Shell than
anything else - they put in all the additives, but we can all believe what
we like, I guess.

Optimax is more expensive than unleaded so pound/mile is similar.

Did you have a bad experience with supermarket fuel?
I also know of people of the same belief that supermarket fuel is tainted in
some way. This may have been the case years ago but not now as far as I
know.
I had some supermarket fuel (4 star) in 1987 (or thereabouts) that left me
baffled as to why my car was running appallingly. After the next top of from
a different filling station cured the problem.
I've been using Tescos for many years now and never had a problem.

With regards to Shell, has anyone seen any Shell filling stations recently?
In Aylesbury, Shell are gone - not a hint that thy ever existed here. I do
know that their Oil reserves in Nigeria are all but gone, and because of
this they're losing market share....

I use Optimax and there is a definate difference in performance
and very little difference in MPG. However, its a function of
octane and other brands provide a similar product. But not Tesco's.

I had that sort of problem where the engine wouldn't pull the skin off a rice
pudding. I found that the fuel pump drive belt was so loose it had jumped a
tooth and mucked up the timing. When I eventually managed to loosen the three
bolts holding the pump frame to the block it dropped into place nicely with a
reasonably taught drive belt.

Cheers, Peter.
