Whilst I am tempted to go for the cheapest offer, I seem to recall reading
of lots of horror stories in here in the past. Can anyone recommend a good
insurer who will cover my van for a low premium.
It's a 1997 Abbey Stafford County, I would guess that it's worth somewhere
between £4 -5K.
In anticipation, many thanks.
Steve
Stick with what you know, unless you are going to save mega bucks. I
could have got a saving on my insurance if I had used NFU Mutual but
some of the conditions didn't suit so I stayed with the CC who are not
the cheapest but who I know will do a good job if I have to claim.

I don't suffer from stress..................I'm just a carrier
I don't know if the situation is the same as it is with cars, in that you
don't necessarily get what you pay for. For the last 2 years I have insured
one of my cars with Elephant, because they were very cheap. What stunned me
about them is that when I needed to claim, they were brilliant, even though
they were the cheapest. I was even more surprised yesterday when the
renewal came through and was £50 less than last year (I don't work for them
or anything by the way). In the past, I have insured cars with Norwich
Union, paying a bit extra because they're a big firm etc. When I tried to
claim from them, they completely disowned me!
Has anyone any good experiences with more independant insurers?

Try Bakers of Cheltenham or - if you are over 50 - Saga. I have used both,
and they both seem ok. Bakers' Econony policy would suit a van of that age
and value. Their up-market policy is more expensive, and provides 'new for
old' cover - but you have to insure the van for the new replacement value -
so it gets to be *very* expensive.

NFU no problems with claims, prices did go up about 30% last year but
still very cheap.
I got a better price on the phone than on line so worth getting a
quote both ways.
Lenny
They're up again this year. Our renewal (NFU) just dropped thru' the
letterbox and is due 17/4/04, it's up *another* £40 (or 23%). We're now
being asked to pay £210 for an £8,000 value.
Might try your tip and ring them up, nothing ventured...
We'll shop around again. In 2002, IGI Insurance thru' the broker Shield
Direct were very competitive - cheaper than NFU:

Hmm, just tried Shields on-line quote thingy, and our 'van is on the
exempt list so they won't quote now!
The list includes Adria, Chateau, Tec, Hymer, Eriba etc (as well as my
Hobby!).

My problem with NFU mutuals terms was that they will not cover damage
to an awning unless the van is also damaged. They are also a little
picky about security devices, they want two on immediately after the
van is disconnected from the towcar, CC say one once the van has been
disconnected for more than 8 hours. Other than that their quotes were
competitive and they seem to have a good reputation.
For my purposes a determining factor is the length of period you can take
the 'van abroad. I am retire and like to go to France for 8+ weeks at a
time.
Incidentally, few folk check their household insurance which they should do
if they go off for long spells. Some companies only permit the house to be
empty for 30 days. I asked my insurance company "What about a relative
sleeping in for one night?" they were iffy about that suggestion but I doubt
that they could challenge it.

I remember the howls of protest and derision when I warned the members
of this newsgroup many months ago that NFU would gain as much business
as they could, then significantly raise their prices.
Told you so!!!
Only?
Heavens, I think that's a big saving - and membership of a club (I'm not a
member, belonging to the other lot) is worth having in itself.

Norwich Union has been very good with us - and we didn't consider them
expensive at all. But I don't believe on looking for the cheapest, you don't
know what you're getting.

My solution was to pay the odd pound or so a month more and to stay
with the CC.

That still sounds cheap.

My NFU policy only requires a wheel clamp.
Lenny
Elaine (her indoors!) rang a few places today, one quote was over £400!
So I think I agree that the £210 is 'acceptable'... we certainly haven't
found cheaper.

My CCC insurance requires a wheel clamp and hitch lock when not towing.
It is still insured, but the excess is very high if you do not have them
fitted.

I saved £380 last year! - I didn't renew with anybody. I reckoned based on
the following observations:-
That, since the 'van's 10 years old, the pikeys won't be interested
It's worth about £4500 so if it takes a knock it doesn't owe me much
It's not a legal requirement for towing
The van gets used for about 6-8 weeks of the year - it's in secure storage
for the rest!
The renewal was *FAR* more than my family car - which is used *EVERY* day
and therefore subject to far greater risk!
The only thing I altered was to move to a more secure storage site ( had
to - local council restrictions, otherwise I'd have stayed where I was, did
me a favour really!) for the same price!
You may think that from the tone of this post that I hate insurance
companies - I *DO*! I hate to line the pockets of others for years and years
and then they turn their backs when you try to make a claim - but I'll
remain within the law as required - just!
I'll keep adding up my £380's a year - hell, it pays for the car insurance!
YMMV - but hey, it's a free world!

Fair enough. As you say, caravan insurance isn't compulsary - and third
party cover will be provided by your car insurance while towing.
Don't forget, though, that caravan insurance also provides about two million
quid's worth of public liability insurance - in case you accidentally set
fire to a neighbouring caravan or somebody trips over your mains cable and
breaks their neck. Your household policy probably doesn't cover this when
you are caravanning.
For what it's worth, my 13 year-old van is of a similar value to yours, and
is insured with Saga for under 100 quid. Maybe you're not old enough?!
Biggest factor is whether your van is a twin axle. Many insurers won't
touch them, and most impose stringent requirements for anti-theft
devices. I ended up with CC, as cheapest and also offering best cover.

Slightly unorthodox spelling of "area" perhaps?
