I'm thinking of taking the caravan to Venice. The shortest route is via
Switzerland. I seem to remember that the Swiss are unwelcoming to
foreign cars let alone caravans and that there are charges.

Any advice?

You will need a Swiss autoroute vignette which you can purchase
at the border, otherwise you cannot use motorways and it is
essentially impossible to drive in Switzerland without going on
motorways. They cost CHF40 (33E, 29) and you need one each for
car and caravan. They run from 1/12 of one year to 31/1 of the
next year but one, say from 1/12/11 to 31/1/13. You can also buy
them on line - Google is your friend.

The alternative is to go through Germany. Motorways are free but
80kph limit unless you have the German equivalent of an MoT for
your caravan which you can only get in Germany and which you will
not get unless your van is fitted with shock absorbers - then you
can do 100kph. Then go over the Brenner Highway (chargeable) into
northern Italy and wend your way to Venice.

A good alternative is to stay somewhere outside Venice and travel
in by train - which are frequent, quick and cheap.

Excellent reply. Thanks very much.

If I go through Germany, won't I have to go through Austria? And isn't
it as bad as Switzerland?

The last time I tried this I got as far as Annecy and liked it so much I
never got to Italy :(

I wouldn't argue with that - save for that very steep hill walk
back to the municipal site!!

You do need an Austrian vignette to use the Brenner Highway but
for car and caravan up to 3.5t train weight it is only E8.30 for
a 10 day pass or E24.30 for longer, and you only need one.

We're Annecy fans as well! There are 2 charges for Austria - one is the
general vignette 8.30 and then a separate toll charge for the Brenner
motorway of 8.50. You can avoid both by using the Fern Pass out of
Germany and then the Reschen Pass into Italy. Both easy caravan routes.
You might consider staying at Camping Miramare which is just across the
lagoon from Venice. It's a short walk from the site to the ferry. See

Take a look at: Luxembourg (cheap fuel), Strasbourg, north bank of Bodensee
(avoids Swiss vignette fees), Reutte (optionally via Stuttgart/Ulm), Landeck
(westwards, not on motorway, so no fee), Pfunds, Nauders Reschen Pass/Passo
di Resia (pleasent, easy run) to Bolzano/Bozen. An alternative return could
be east (A4), north (A23) and Villach, through Carinthia/KarntenCarinzia
to Salzburg. Weekly vignettes are affordable in Austria. Many lakes/sites
in Carinthia and the Franz Josef highway, to the Grossglockener' is worth
a run.

Thanks for some great replies.

I'm going to try the new ferry company to Dunkirk then drive down the
Belgian motorways to a campsite I know near Colmar. I've done the drive
from Dunkirk before and hopefully the Alzeimer sufferer (I'm serious)
who welcomed me last time has been removed. They do send me a Christmas
card every year though.

Thence to Lucerne - thanks to Woody I'm buying the vignettes online in
advance. And, if I don't like Lucerne too much, on to Venice. I may use
the campsite recommended by John Miller if it's in ACSI otherwise I'll
chance it (I'm going at the beginning of June).

Coming back I may take the route suggested by Keith; it all depends on
how I feel at the time.

One final question. I know the Swiss have their own Franc but are Euros
widely accepted or do I have to buy Swiss Francs?

They are in cities/touristy areas but 'small' towns, camp sites.. not so
much, except places near euro-land borders. So don't rely on it, use it when
you can, keeping CHFs for when necessary.
Lucerne is nice and the road into Italy easy/pleasent.
