I've received the following letter from Dometic. Although it doesn't apply
to me, it begs wider publicity in the interests of safety. I have OCR'd it
but couldn't reproduce the label diagram, so I've attempted to describe the
diagram. No doubt "Electrolux Michael" will weigh in with any further info.
............................................................................
"We believe you have a new generation Electrolux "Power Fridge" model
RM6270, RM6271,RM6291 L, RM6400 or RM6401 refrigerator in your Caravan or
Motorhome. During our routine tests we have discovered a possible problem
with a gas component manufactured by an outside company. As a result it is
possible that under certain circumstances the flame failure device on your
refrigerator may not work properly.
The problem is confined to refrigerators with serial numbers beginning with
000 up to 049.
All refrigerators with serial numbers beginning with 050 or higher and/or
are marked with a black dot on the data plate, have already been equipped
with a new component and are not affected. You can identify if your
refrigerator is affected by referring to the enclosed sheet.
Our models RM 4xxx-series are not affected because they use different
components.
Should your Caravan or Motorhome be equipped with an aforementioned fridge,
the gas valve will be exchanged free of charge if you follow the steps
below:
• As a precautionary measure you should not use your refrigerator on gas
until the gas component has been exchanged. You can continue to use the
refrigerator on mains or 12 volt.
• Please contact the nearest Electrolux service station immediately so that
they can arrange to exchange the necessary part. To do this you should
telephone the Service Centre listed against the first two characters of your
postcode.
• If you have any questions you can telephone Electrolux Leisure Appliances
on our Hot Line number 01582 588207. Please note this is for questions only,
you will not be able to make the service appointment on this number, this
has to be done directly with your local centre.
We are very sorry for the problem that has occurred. We ask for your
understanding that we will inspect and if necessary modify your refrigerator
as soon as possible.
Yours sincerely
Hugh Lamberton Technical Services Executive

Another corporate name change.

If it were "Domestic" it would make more sense.

Electrolux has been used, known and familiar for decades, why change?

Snippetty snippetty snip,

This has been going on for about a year now, and most owners will now have
been traced. As the local service centre for our area we haven't done one
for nearly two months.

We have never seen a failure of the part, but have been busy replacing
seemingly good units.

Basically, don't panic

Cheers

Dear Georgina,
It could have been worse - they could have picked "Emetic". Now that would
really make you puke!

Ian,

I think the letter is self -explanatory but very simply there is a remote
possibility of a problem on a small number of Refrigerators. All of these
have been traced thru the trade and the owners have been written to
individually.

The risk of a problem is confined to the models and serial numbers in the
letter.

If anyone would like a copy of the letter e-mail your snail mail address to
in...@dometic.co.uk

George,

Very simply the Leisure Division of Electrolux had been operationally
seperate from the Domestic Appliance company for many, many yeras.

Then in August last year the owners of Electrolux decided to sell it!

The new owner is EQT a Swedish private equity company.

We have adopted the name "Dometic" as this is the name we have always used
in the USA and was our biggest Brand name. We also manufacture and sell
products under the names Seitz, Cramer, DuoTherm, Sealand and A&E Systems.

Well, thanks for the explanation. What does 'dometic' mean? Is it a
mis-spelling or an transatlanticism?

Hi Kenneth,

It does not have a meaning, at least I don't know what it is and I started
in 1973! It dates from 1967 when for complicated legal reasons we started to
use it in the USA and Canada. It appears to have been made up as "sounding
nice" but all involved who may know have long since retired.

David,
reading between the lines of the Dometic letter I believe the recall applies
to fridges of the specified types which were manufactured between week 00
and week 49 of year 2000. Now they could number the weeks of the financial
year but I believe that the calendar year is more likely. The
caravan/motorhome manufacture date could be several months after this, of
course. So we're talking about vans of one or two years old.

Ian

2001 model year, early production. Therefore June July 2000 to March 2001
ish.

Cheers
