My diesel engined motor appears to be losing a bit of oil past the piston
rings. This oil is finely spotted all over the front of my caravan, which
is GRP. Have you any ideas on how to remove the oil without ruining the
GRP? What solvents are safe to use? I have tried a substance called Silky,
a proprietary cleaner for caravans, etc., but it will take about 4 days
using this and I'm sure the elbow grease is contributing more than the
substance.

Peter,

Farecla do a range of products grouped together under the 'Boat Pride' banner.
They are designed for GRP boats but are equally useful on caravans.

The range includes.... Hull Cleaner, Wax Polish, Rubbing Compound and Acrylic
Window Polish. You would need the Hull Cleaner followed by the Wax Polish.

To quote Farecla, Hull cleaner removes grime, oil stains and old polish
easily and quickly without damaging the gel coat, bringing up colour and
surface lustre like new'. If you have trouble finding it, e-mail
<anthon...@which.net> I have it in stock.

Peter, My van is G.R.P and I have used proffesionally and as a Caravanner
either white spirit or petrol and finish off with domestic "Flash" You
might improve the problem by fitting a deflector on your tailpipe

When this happens to our hire trailers we find methylated spirits is
good, prior to normal washing.

I have used a hand cleaner called "Swarfega" (available from people like
Halfords), that seems to be O.K. on GRP.

DON'T USE GUNK!!!!!

I had the same problem and Gunk dissolved the plastic external locker
cover!!!
Test it on a small hidden area first, and check over a few days, as my
dissolving problem didn't appear at first!!

Firstly don't use any solvent based material, like engine cleaner, brake
cleaner etc. I suggest using one of those new T-Cut color matched
polishes, expensive, but works fine!

Don't forget to rinse off thoroughly - as soon as grease dissolved -
this is the reason problems can occur. Don't leave the gunk in sittu
for any length of time.
