At this time of the year particularly, blue tits land on the
window ledges, then onto the wooden window frames and seem to
peck at or tap on the window glass - what ever are they doing?

I thought it might be reflections, but they do it in the
morning when the curtains are closed as well as open. They do
also peck at the moss/debris on the window ledge.

I think they get something off the wood and hit the glass at the same
time. At this time of year I see them clinging onto an old wood panel
fence in my garden pecking at something.

Thanks,

That was what I thought initially, but watching one this
afternoon, it was definitely sitting upright and pecking at the
window well away from the wooden frame.

Is it defending its territory against an imagined interloper?

Possibly, although as I said it does not seem to matter if the
curtains are drawn or not. This afternoon, it moved suddenly
further along the window ledge, then resumed it's pecking.

Why would it make a difference on the reflection as seen outside whether
curtains are drawn or not? Dark curtain linings might even enhance the
effect.

I think that at this time of the year the young of the year just peck
almost anywhere in the process of learning how to keep themselves alive
through the winter.

Mike.

I have a few videos of this behaviour at my Dad's house.
They are definitely pecking the reflection.

It's "its", Roger, not "it's". We don't allow misapostrophes in this ng
unless you or we are drunk, in which case they are acceptable.

I'm curious though: sitting upright? Could someone post a picture of
this behaviour?

Might they be pecking at their own image in curiosity? Budgies appear
to do the same thing in bird cages.
