Waxwings are rare to scarce visitors to our County (eg: only one recorded in
1999), but during the most recent major irruption in 1996 there were many
recorded, including over 100 in the Hinckley Road area of Leicester.
So far this year [which has been very good nationally] there have been
several, including singles at Ansty, Leicester (Hinckley Road) & Thurmaston,
and 17 at Melton Mowbray which were very confiding ;-)
The most recent sighting is of six in Markfield (around Rectory Road) over
the last few days, and there is still a good chance of further flocks being
found. Your best bet is to keep your eyes open for any berry-bearing trees
or shrubs, ring Birdline Midlands and check the birdguides website - good
luck!
