Can anyone tell me anything about this amp? Specifically, how does it
differ from the newer 8R, and how would it compliment my Heybrook
Optima's?

Thanx,

James Harvey.

I've got an 8R. As far as I know, there are a couple of differences. My 8R
has an AV input with fixed gain for use as a second amp to power the front
R&L spkrs of an AV setup. When selected (with the input selector and a
second switch on the back), your AV/Dolby receiver/amp will control the
system volume. This enables you to make use of your existing main speakers
within an AV setup. I think that the 8R has a remote, as opposed to the 8,
although basic is not the word - Vol UP, DOWN and Mute. 3 buttons !!
However, if you have an Arcam CD remote (I have the 8SE), you can use it for
both CD and Amp. I guess the 8 doesn't have the circuitry to receive a
remote signal. Don't quote me on the remote stuff, but I'm fairly certain
about the AV bits.

My setup is: 8SE CD player, 8R Amp, Sony 520 Minidisc with Tannoy Precision
P1 speakers (bi-wired). Fantastic sound. I've heard a friend's 8 Amp / 7
CD / 8P combo with B&W 601s - the 8P does make a difference. My next buy.

Hope that helps.

Would anyone happen to know if the 9R integrated has this feature - I've
a 7R at the moment, and am debating whether to get an 8P or sell the 7R
and buy a 9R integrated. My system is an LP12/Lingo, Arcam 7 CD,
Castle Harlech speakers.

Cheers,

John

Further to my last ... here's a quote from the Arcam website:

" Arcam's Alpha 9 integrated amplifier is designed to rival the best
separate pre and power amplifier packages. It sets new standards in sound
quality, aesthetics and flexibility.
The amplifier delivers a continuous power output of over 70 watts per
channel into 8 ohms, with both channels driven. The sound is clean, powerful
and beautifully transparent with both digital and analogue sources,
including vinyl records (note that the plug-in phono stage, which caters for
both MM and low output MC cartridges, is a dealer fitted optional extra).

The Alpha 9's flexibility makes it the ideal control centre for a
sophisticated hi-fi or A/V system. Six line inputs, including two tape
loops, are standard; a seventh (phono) input is an optional extra. Separate
listen (source selection) and record controls allow you to listen to one
source whilst recording another; alternatively the record output may be used
to send line level signals to a second amplifier, to play music in another
room in your home or office. Both the listen and volume controls are
motorised for easy armchair operation via infra-red remote control. The
supplied CR35 handset also operates most Arcam CD players and our Alpha 8
tuner.
Two independently switched pairs of loudspeaker sockets and a headphones
socket are included, so you can run two sets of speakers in separate rooms
if required. Finally, the bypassable limited range tone and balance controls
allow you to fine tune the amplifier settings to suit your listening
environment and system requirements.
It is easy to add Audio-Video capability to any system using the Alpha 9. It
has properly buffered pre-amp out and power-amp in sockets, as well as two
tape loops. For outstanding performance we recommend adding our Xeta 2 A/V
processor. This combination has been designed to deliver the very best
stereo and Dolby Surround sound, whatever your source or programme
material.* "
