Ok I'm currently looking for speakers to hook up to my Yamaha RVX-596
Reciever
Here are the choices I've narrowed it down to:

KEF Q15 MK1 £99.95
Mission 701 £79.95
Eltax Monitor III £59.95

Which ones should I go for?
I've heard that the KEFs are pretty good, but the others are pretty cheap.
I'd be getting 4 speakers, for front and rear. Is this a good idea or silly
idea?
I would then save up and get me a center speaker and a sub to complete the
set :)

If it's silly then I may purchase these first:
B&W 601 S2
Thought these would cost a lot more.. any ideas on the cheapest price?
I would preferably go for the cheaper options though.

Thanks for any input!

I have a pair of 701's for the Left and Right in my system and am very
pleased with their performance, especially for the price. As for getting 4
of these, if you're connecting them up to an amp\receiver then it could
work, just set sub and centre to "no". Get a centre as soon as poss though,
IMO it is the lynchpin (Spelling??) of every home cinema, possibly the most
hard working of all the speakers especially in DD\DTS.

I use the Kef's as surrounds and they sound great to me, thats part of a
full kef speaker setup though, All connected to an Yamaha A2.

Forget getting 4 speakers and spend the money on the 601 S2's.

You'll be getting a FAR superior pair of speakers and your amplifier will
have a far easier job driving just the one pair of speakers. That on its own
will give you a better sounding system.

For £20 less than the 601's though, have a look at the Monitor Audio Bronze
2's. Lovely speakers (about £179)

I'd say get the four Mission 701's and save up.........
The Missions are very nice speakers there like the B&W 602 but much cheaper
and more bass.......

Mission 701's have more bass than 602's???? Surely you jest! The 602 is an
all round better speaker than the Mission 701
but then it should be because it's £300. Even the 601's are a LOT better
than the Missions.

I do agree with the point about going for 4 speakers if you have a surround
sound amp, in which case I'd go for the KEF's
ANY day of the week over the others. If it's only a stereo amp though I
still say just get the 2 speakers and go for the better
B&W's

Well the amp is a is a Dolby Digital one, which drives 75W RMS per channel
minimum.
So I guess it's the KEFs then :)
Now if only I could save enough for a nice REL subwoofer to go with :)

Cool. So your getting basically what I'm getting?
What are you doing for the center speaker?

Also how much are you getting the sub for and how much?
Just checking out prices and places for the subs :)

Thanks.

Worth noting that the KEFs are front-ported, so they'll probably sound
better (less boomy) than the Missions if, like me, your speakers are
wall-bracket mounted, or close to the walls anyway.

I'm getting close to what you're getting. I'm doing q35.2's front,
q85s's read and q95.2 centre. it's all the same driver though. the 35's
are a floor standing version of the 15's and the 85s's are wall
mountable speakers with the uniq driver.

the 95 is a telly mounted centre.

how much and how much? :)

actually I'm getting a rel strata one second hand at 200 knicker.
although there seem to be zero reviews of it or even details of it on
the net, I'm told it's very similar to the rel strata 2 which seems very
highly regarded (mind you, all rel subs seem very highly regarded, and
expensive)

if that hadn;t come up I prolly would have bought the rel storm from a
local hifi shop ex demo at £500

all plugged into a pioneer vsa e07 av amp (again, zero net reviews) and
a sony 725 dvd player. once it is all together I'll let you know how it
all sounds :)

cheers

I was also lucky enough to pick up a second hand REL Strata also for £200
about a year ago from a HiFi shop in Sheffield. It sounds awesome! much
much better than the Yamaha amps I had been auditioning, you wont be
dissapointed. It is a bit big though, not a problem if you have a decent
sized room but I've just moved into a new Barratt shoebox :-)
I have all the subs settings on minimum (Barratt shoebox remember) and it
still sounds very powerfull, I reckon if I turn it up full Barratt would
have to build me a new house!
Just for info, I have Kef Q55's for the fronts, Kef Q95C centre and JPW mini
monitors for the rears all being driven by a Sony 930 amp.
Been thinking of changing the JPW's for Kef Q85's but they are a bit pricey
for what they are, (can get Q15 for less money) also have read no reviews of
Q85 (and not had chance to listen to any yet) but I do like their small
profile (back to the Barratt Shoebox syndrome again!).

Enjoy!!

Dean.

well, I'm thinking seriously about the 55.2's as well. if nothing else
they look much beter imho (the single looking driver on the 35's looks a
little bare if you know what I mean). except it seems like it's covering
territory (is bass) that the sub will cover with ease so I'm not sure
that it is worth it. thoughts? is it worth the extra 150 quid? it'll all
be going on interest free credit anyways :)

about the strata (now I've found someone who has one), how have you got
it connected up? via the line level lfe input, or the speaker level xlr
connection? I'm wondering if it can take both simultaneously so I can
have the sub connected to the main's so I can call the mains full range
for music and yet keep the lfe input for movies. does it have separate
volume controls for both?

I can't wait to try some of my more bass heavy cd's with it (like "it
came from outer bass 2" :) to see how it copes.

as for the 85s's, well, my lounge is gonna be 18x13 foot but I don;t
want to waste the space at the back with stand mounted rear speakers.
althought the q15's are cheap, I wanna keep all the speakers with the
same driver for tonal balance, ie, ther q.2 driver which the 85s(.2)'s
have. ther q15.s's are much the same as the 85s's so...

so tell me, as an emsemble, how does it all sound? mine is gonna be
powered by a pioneer thx amp so I'm hoping it should all be really nice.
I'll come back and tell when it's all installed.

cheers

Hi Dave, sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you, major prob's with
my ISP (globalnet), have now changed ISP and have at last got one that seems
to work ok (so far!).
You wont need the Q55 if you are getting a Strata, I got the REL first (I
only had JPW mini monitors at the time) and then bought the Q55s because
they where on special offer, only paid slightly more than Q35s (from
Superfi). The Q55s sound great without the sub for music, plenty of low end
grunt (from Sony 930 amp, which isnt the best amp for music) but It's
sometimes nice to have the sub on as well, depends on what music you are
listening to and who you are trying to impress/annoy!
Having said you wont need the Q55s, I do agree with you that from a purely
asthetic point of view the Q55's look much better and also you can always
play around with different setups (more/less bass to fronts/sub, sub on/off
etc) whereas if you get the Q35s you will be more restricted.
For movies I always have the sub on (but quite low) and I've set the bass to
the fronts lower than when I listen to music. Basically (for movies) I let
the sub do all the hard work (which it does VERY well!) and have the fronts
just "filling in" a bit if you know what I mean, it takes a bit of time
setting up but its well worth it (and you only have to do it once, most good
amps will remember individual settings for different inputs).

I connect the sub using the line level inputs to the sub out on the amp,
works great, havent tried any of the other inputs because:
1, dont really understand how to set the sub up using the other inputs and
2, it sounds just great using line level.

It doesnt have seperate volume controls for both, just the one set (coarse,
gain and fine).
Hope this helps, if you need any more info then get back to me ASAP as I go
back to sea (work) on Wed for 17 days :-(

Regards,
Dean

yeah, problems with isp's can be a pain in the arse at times. it's just
fortunate for that I work for one :)

> You wont need the Q55 if you are getting a Strata, I got the REL first (I

right, I've got the rel strata now (180 quid, not bad I thought),
plugged into my pioneer vsa e07 via the sub out. the main LR's are
currently a pair of genexxa lx5 pro's which are set to large, so they
ought to be getting a full range signal too. I've not moved yet so I've
not got the kef speakers yet.

to be honest, I prolly ought to get the 35's from a purely fiscal point
of view :) now I own the sub I do think that the 35's are probably my
best best. I don't know if my amp does seperate settings per input, but
then I've not really experimented with it that much yet.

Rel emailed me the manual for the strata so I know how to use with with
a stereo pair. with the speakers wired in normally, run a second set of
speaker wires to the sub and then use the coarse and fine knobs to make
the sub come in just where the mains leave off. then you can use it for
stereo listening without the amp's digital wotsits getting in the way.

This is how I intend to wire the sub up, I'll also run a phono over but
I'll use the channel level tool on the amp to get that volume level
right, I've got 10db to play with so thats, what three times the volume
up and down to get it right with. btw, if you want a copy of the manual
then ask and I'll email it across.

I'm really looking forward to getting this all set up. that sub looks
like it's really got some welly, I stuck the bass level manager thing on
the amp which generates a huge bass pink noise type thing out of the sub
(sounds like an earthquake:) and in my small room things were rattling
at -20db... and the amp can go to +12 :) not that I am a basshead, just
never had experience of bass like this.

thanks for all your help

dave

In article <9DxZ5.8603$ma1.1...@news2-win.server.ntlworld.com>,
saxb...@yahoo.com says...

the sales guy I got my amp off had this for private sale. 2.5 years old
and in excellent condition. here was me about to pay 500 quid for an ex
demo storm (which I am sure is a better sub... but not 320 quid better)
and I thought hmm... thank you very much :) I actually bought it unheard
as I didn't want to miss the bargain, I wasn't disappointed.

now I have the sub wired up and I'm continuing to tweak it's settings,
but it's getting closer to perfect in my bedroom. it's certainly a
serious bit of kit I'll give it that :)

cheers
