A friend of mine has a pair of amazing speakers, he tells me they are JBL
250 Ti.

They stand about 5 Feet tall and look triangular from the front, having one
straight vertical side, and one side sloping out at an angle to accept the
midrange and woofer. The grill covers only the main drivers, the tweeter is
at the top and exposed.

What I want to know is :-

Is this the right model number?

How much were they?

How much will a pair cost me?

Where can I get some?

I spoke to JBL UK, but my enquiry was dismissed.

If anyone knows these speakers I would like to know how much they are
worth. My friend doesn't want to sell them, but he has told me £4000.00
will change his mind, THEY ARE GOOD! but is this too much.

Can anyone help

Thanks.

Are these white van speakers? Get the serial numbers, model number from
the speaker, phone JBL and get the answers.

If JBL have no idea about these speakers then I'd quickly assume your
'friend' is trying to pull a fast one.

Nick.

No, they were marketed by JBL and, as I recall, reviewed in HFN&RR some years back.

By the description you posted these are high end jbl produced about five
or six year back.

Believe they are not currently in production. But did audition them and
liked them, of course that was in the U.S. they may sound different in
the U.K.

Yes, I know what you mean. The chemical make-up of British air
causes variations in the air-air partial reflection of sound and hence the
resultant sound field caused by a pair of speakers in the UK is slightly
different to one in America. Of course, you can offset this by slightly
altering the alignment of the speakers along local ley-lines (which Britain
has a lot of) to improve the s/n ratio :)

Craig.

Sorry if I've offended anyone- It's just in the UK JBL never really get
reviewed by
the comics and if they are reviewed then they're mostly AV types.

Hello,

As far as I know the JBL 250 Ti is out of production. But it is followed
by the JBL Ti5000. (Smaller versions are also available: Ti3000 (the one
I own and the Ti1000.)

The Ti5000 is at least available in the Netherlands and Germany. Last
prices I have seen (a month ago) are about 3600 Deutsche Mark for one
pair.
I get the impression that they are dumping them. Catalog prices where
12000 Deutsche Mark just a year ago.

Good luck.

I don't have a pair but I do know they were reviewed in the 1986 HiFi Choice 'Collection' edition.
They cost £3,299 at the time. £4k sounds excessive for a 2nd hand pair. There are plenty better
transducers for less out there.

The conclusion in the HiFi Choice says:

'..these speakers showed significant excess in the bass and trebble. The design is superbly built &
finished, has a high power handling and volume capability, low distortion and an extended smooth
response. However, in general this speaker did not show the required level of dynamic presentation,
transparency and stereo depth expected from a flagship model at this price level and I would
therefore advise a serious audition prior to purchase'

JBLs Everest model was produced later (for £6k!) and should certainly be within a £4k price-band 2nd
hand. Also, look at the big Infinities if you have this kind of dosh - there are a couple of IRSs on
the market at present that are being advertised at £4950. These cost £10k new at the same time as
the JBLs were about. With a bit of haggling...

Apols to Nicholas Kitchener!
