I have a pair of old Heco (German) speakers, model Interior Reflex 20H.
On New Years Eve someone wondered what they'd sound like at max volume,
and destroyed the two bass/midrange units in each speaker. These units
have no maker's name on them, but a sticker with the number 1014540; the
instruction leaflet quotes their size as 160mm. Testing suggests that
the tweeters and crossovers are still OK.
The speakers weren't wonderful (a bit dry sounding) but they have
sentimental value and I'd quite like to refurbish them with new
bass/midrange units. I could order some from Heco, but the price they
quoted was too high. So, a few questions. (I know that some of them
may be really dumb, and apologies for that.)
Does anyone know what make and model the drive units were, from the
above description?
Is there a cheaper equivalent that I could buy in the UK?
Is there a "loudspeaker bible" where one can look this sort of thing up?
What firm(s) in the UK stock a good range of drive units and do mail
order?
The speakers have a nominal impedance of 4 ohms. Does this mean that
the drive units would also have to be 4 ohms?
If the answer to the last question is Yes, what would be the effect of
using units of a different impedance?
Will be grateful for any info and/or advice.

I wouldn't spend a great deal of money on these boxes, either.
You may find some Monacor 160mm drivers (50W SPX?) that do the job
(years ago I fitted them in a similar type of speaker). If I remember
rightly, they were full range drivers, paper with foam surround, with
an aluminium "tweeter" cone in the centre; inspired by a mag design,
I cut out the cone with a scalpel (careful!) and used them as a
midrange/bass driver. Maybe difficult to get a 4 Ohm type though.
And don't expect too much from this.
Alternative: there's a guy I know of who repairs speakers; a burnt-
out voice coil usually costs about 35 DM (12 UKP) to fix. He also
does cones & foam surrounds.

Josef, thanks very much for this info. But before I contact Herr Peiter,
does anyone know if there's anyone in the UK doing the same kind of
repairs to drive units commercially?
