Hi guys,

I am in a process of upgrading my Ortofon 5E cartridge from the
factory supplied 5E (with my Debut III) turn table to either the OM 10
or the just released 2M red.

I mainly listen to Jazz and Rock which means I am looking for
sufficient detail and bass at a budget cost. Both of these cart's are
around the same price mark.

I would like to know user experiences with both of them as I can't
seem to find anyone here (in Australia) who has done this comparative
study. Any tips will be of great help.

Cheers Max

I'm surprised your fellow countryman (the one with all the answers)
hasn't kicked in here? Anyway, I haven't heard either of those carts so
I can't comment and, even if I had, my opinion wouldn't necessary help
you.

All I would say is the step up from a 5E to a 10 is more of an
'upnibble' than an upgrade - the Ortofons (and Goldrings) had a common
body design which could be upgraded by means of better profile needles -
the improvement being more in terms of tracking capability than anything
significant in terms of tonality, I gather. I upgraded a 5E to an OM20
with great effect (much better tracking) and have a 520 Mk II (which I
would have thought would be ideal for Rock, as it isn't shy), having
been advised the '20s' were a good compromise between price and
perfomance in their respective ranges.

That all said, out of the two carts you mention I would say go for the
2M Red - it's new, it's hardly likely to be *worse* than older range and
it looks tha bollox:

Even better, Noel Keywood would give it 5 of his 'globes'....

How bad is that?

Thanks for that.

Yes I did read the article by Noel Keywood and other reviews before
asking this question. But the problem is all the reviews are focused
on the Blue, Bronze and Black. Unfortunately the affordable Red
doesn't get mentioned much.

Then it falls to you to be The One - you have to buy one, try it and
report back here!

(I've done plenty of that - keep tuning in to this station to see my
'review' of the ultra-cheap Barearse Nikkai PVR shortly! ;-)

One thing you should look at is the cartridge loading, specifically the
capacitance as they are all designed to run into 47Kohms.

Most turntable cables offer around 200-250pF (picofarads) capacitance
but if you have big thick coax it could be as low as 100pF or less. A
Shure M75EDII as I had performs best into a load capacitance of around
470pF so I made up some short phono cables with a 330pF capacitor inside
each socket (my turntable cables are low cap). The difference was
amazing - the edginess was gone, the whole sound was smoother and easier
on the ear and as such it left the bass where it should be. I too like
some jazz but more often play classical.

I also had/have an FF15E and the cap leads worked on that as well.

A bit of digging around the Ortofon web site should reveal what they
consider to be the correct loading - or pester them until they come up
with the data - and get out your soldering iron (or find someone who
knows how to use one) and make up the cables. You could make up two sets
of cables, one with 330pF inside and the other with say 220pF inside and
see which works best. It will cost you less than the equivalent of GBP5
but could save you a lot of unnecessary expense. Whatever you do don't
buy ready made cables (from the likes of Russ Andrews - universally
known on here as Rip-Off Russ) as you will pay HUGE amounts of money and
cannot guarantee the outcome.

Phil A (a fellow Aussie of yours) will be along shortly to shout at me
and tell you I'm wrong...

Yes I'd imagine so, but what I wondered is what do Ortofon offer now? I
unfortunately can only use the SL5 Technics deck and it has an Ortofon
Concorde with the special fixings that fit the parralel tracking arm.
I feel of late that there may be wear on the stylus, but wondered if you
can still get replacements. Also since losing my sight I really need a sure
fire way to clean the stylus as I can no longer inspect it. i normal play
records wet as it makes for a quieter surface, so suspect it might be pretty
caked in debris!
Somebody suggested an ultrasonic cleaner but I suspect this might cause
damage to the tip construction or the cantilever assembly.
