I will use it with medium sensitivity speakers (Ruark Crusader 2, 88db,
8Ohms) and a passive pre (Creek OBH12 with 20K pot). In theory I should
be able to get as loud as 100db that could go up to 106db (assuming the
amp can stand it) before hearing any significant distortion. It should
be more than enough. I have seen people using traditional 300B SETs
with 91db speakers, I would guess I should get similar results. Any
opinion? Regarding the configuration how does a parallel design compare
(sonically) to a standard SET?
I included below a list of all the kits I was considering (in order of
preference). You will notice I did not include any pure 300B SET as I
believe that 8W might not be enough for me.
1) Audio Note Kit 3 16W ÿffffa31550 SE 2x300B in parallel
2) Welborne Apollo 18W $2690+ SE 6EMT
4) Velleman K8010 65W $2000 Class A KT88
5) World Audio (HFW) 300B W28 ÿffffa3850 p-p 300B
6) AE-25 25W $600 p-p EL34
6) Assemblage ST40 40W $700 p-p EL34
7) Velleman K4040 15W/90W p-p EL34
8) ASUSA A4 30W $550 p-p EL34
9) Wright WPA50 50W $3000 p-p
10) World Audio (HFW) KEL80 W80 ÿffffa3590 p-p 2xEL34 in parallel
11) Edison W18(SE)/W30(p-p) ÿffffa3400
Has anybody tried the World Audio kits (p-p 300B and Kel80 monoblocks),
from Hi-Fi World? How do they comare to the AN ones?

Ago

Hi,
First of all, I have none of the amplifiers in your list. However...
... I would put the Edison kit a lot higher on your list! Have you seen the
TNT review and modifications of this amp? But you shouldn't buy the 400
pounds version... Go for the deluxe version instead (+- 500 pounds).
If you need a lot of power, the Velleman 4040 could be possible for less
then 500 pounds. People having Velleman amps are usually satisfied with the
quality.
Personally, I wouldn't spend big money on a kit amp. It is a great idea if
you have 5-600 pounds. Beyond a certain limit, I would rather buy something
second hand...

8 Watts is more then you need! You should take a look at the site
www.wxs.nl/~rikstoet (site is not updated for a while, a new site is on the
way...) and look at the STOETKIT-I and STOETKIT-II.
These kits sound great and can easily drive your Ruark loudspeakers. Also
the combination with the Creek pass.pre is great, no-problem at all.
I know a lot of the other kits that you mention and I think that building a
StoetKit is the best choice you can make!
The problem is that I'm the designer of the StoetKit, so you probably will
not believe me..........
Maybe I can arrange some reviews on the Stoetkit, or I can send you a copy
of a test the One-Electron-Laboratory in the USE did on the Stoetkit-I.
If you ask me to I will come back to you with more info.....
Regards,
Rik Stoet
p.s. You can see photo of Stoetkit-I also on www.rikstoet.nl , choose
"merken" in the index.

I have recently built the World Audio Kit88 amplifier which is a 36 Watt
class A design with KT88 valves and I am very happy with it. The kit was
easy to build and when finished looks good and drives my Mission 744 speaker
with ease. It does run very hot but providing you do not have small children
this should not be a problem.
In the past I built an ETI hybrid design which had a transistor front end
and EL34's for the output, this was not that good and I kept on using a
NAD3020 which was much better.
If you are near World Audio why don't you phone them up and arrange a demo?
