Hi

I am looking for a pair of large-ish speakers on the second hand
market.

Can anyone suggest a pair suitable for listening to music of all types?

Is it necessary to match the speakers to a particular amp? I have
nothing at all at the moment and have been reading about mission 753s
and Naim amps.

Sources would be mp3/CD and maybe even vinyl.

I cannot afford very expensive kit.

You can get a pair of Spendor BC1s for around £150. I've had a pair for
30 years and have no intention of changing them.

Maybe you'd think of making your own, start with something simple;

Maybe he should know that not everyone agrees with the theory behind the
Voigt Pipe.
Transmission lines, bass-reflex and sealed boxes are equally valid.
Ebay and local "Cash Converters" are good places to look for second-hand
speakers.

Out of interest, what does "agrees with the theory" do you mean the
basic physics is wrong, or do you mean its interpretation?

Take a look at all the "needle" designs on the web. On one side you have
a transmission line that's too short, on the other an improperly loaded
horn with a high cutoff frequency, and in most cases the mouth is mostly
blocked turning it into a bass-reflex that's tuned too low.
Why not just build a bass-reflex that can be easily analysed and tuned?

If you are still thinking of making a pair of your own, then you might
consider this as well;

Designed by the same chap as did the Needles.

I was amused to see them blue (note the post is only a couple of days old) -
my Needles have been blue for a while now! (Of course, it could be a case of
'great minds thinking alike'....!! :-)

Explanatory note for all the past/present/future DIYers here:

The pink and blue vinyl emulsion (called 'wall/ceiling paint' these
days...???) that I used for my speakers was a little more than just whimsy.
In case it is not well known, vinyl emulsion paint acts as a perfect primer
on wood and board and is a quick, cheap easy way to 'kill' the raw board.
(Very cheap if the paint is leftovers from decorating jobs - but I'm not
sure about painting the next pair yellow though...!! :-)

It is touch dry in 20 minutes and can be second coated in as a little as an
hour. It can then be undercoated and glossed in the normal way if required.
I varnished my Pinkies with a water-based 'semi-gloss' varnish (to stop them
taking fingerprints) whilst retaining the 'powdery' look that I like. All of
this can be sanded off easily for different future treatment....

Forget any notion of smacking them with a nice emerald green metalflake from
Halfords - that MDF will drink all you care to throw at it!!

Remember also that these are 'experimental' and I was/am not likely to
bugger about with veneers on speakers I might not have kept! Asitappens, the
Needles are destined for Brussels in the next few days if I don't make a
second pair!!

(Actually who wants sodding *veneer* anyway - my audio kit isn't trying to
be *furniture*...??)

I had a pair of EPOS ES14s and upgraded then to ES30s. EPOS need a good
amp to drive them but provide a very musical sound, suited to all types
of music and tastes. You can get these speakers on Ebay for very
reasonable amounts of money.

The larger speakers are well worth getting if you have the space -
enormous improvement in soundstage and bass extension.

There's a potential whole thread full of ad hominem vitriol, right there!

The week before last I was demonstrated a small "full-range" semi-horn
loaded driver for the first time. In the face of such enthusiasm I felt
unable to say anything. I can understand the appeal of valve amplifiers
but this really has me baffled.

<Stir, stir (but without the ad hominem bit being only an occasional
reader/contributor)>
