Can someone direct me to an information repository that will set me on the
road to starting off a marine tank? I have been keeping freshwater tropicals
for a couple of years now and fancy trying my hand at marines. Only thing is
I'm not sure about all the new vocabulary that goes with it...living rock,
living sand, protien skimmers, reverse osmosis, actinic lights, ozonizers,
UV steralization....? What are all these things and do I really need them
all? Is there a publication that is the "industry standard recommendation"
to set me on my way?

Aquarticles has a number of articles about setting up marine tanks, but
to my mind one of the best (and for that matter one of the best and most
inspirational articles, period), is:

http://aquarticles.com/articles/saltwater/Blumhagen_First_Reef.html

This article steps the reader through setting up a small beginner's reef
tank at minimum cost - but as the author says, beware of what it might
lead to!

There are quite a few books and you could lurk on the US news group for more
hints. Consider joining the STM mailing list and asking there for help.

In essence a reef is a doddle to start up, you just need loads of money.

Reckon on:

Tank (cheap!)
Skimmer (essential IMO)
Lights
Chiller (if the lights are halides)
Calcium Reactor (if you re keeping hard corals and you will)
Heater Stat
Power heads (maxijets are good)
wave maker
Live Rock
A decent substrate
RO water
Reef Crystals
Test Kits
a few supplements

and Bingo £1,000 at least spent!

Depends how deep you want to go into it. If you have some experience keeping
trops, then marines should be a doddle for you. If you know categorically
that marine is the way forward for you, then go all out for it and get the
best you can afford. If you are unsure, take a look at

experiences setting up a successful mini- reef.
