There was a company near Stoke-O-T , Stikealight ??

Several locals recently acquired some old handheld rigs.
They got their battery packs refurbished and apparently
the packs were so well done that you could even see that
they had been done.
Cost was dirt cheap via Strikalight, about 15 quid IIRC.

I did my own with 4 ni-mh tag cells twice the capacity it used to be :)

You will probably find somewhere like "Batteries America" more cost
effective, although I was very surprised when a friend got a battery for an
Alinco handheld (a 596 I think) for about 30 from Nevada.

Some of the DJ-G5 batteries used normal AA cells, nor sure about that one.
I always like to have the empty battery case
for my handhelds, just in case of supplied battery
pack availability problems later on.

Prices of NiMh cells and chargers have come down
a lot, whilst capacity has gone up.
I currently use GP 2700mA cells and the "book end"
GP charger. Does 'em in an hour or less.
Last year at the Leicster rally I bought some 2900mA
cells. 12 quid for 8 I think it was, which to me seemed
a bargain from Mickeys Electronics.

I use all these batteries and the same charger in an
FT817 and they get used and recharged about once a week.
Still going strong. The pulsed fast charging doesn't
seem to be a problem.
On the subject of performance of cells, I have noticed
that:
* You can have cells that supply the AH capacity, BUT
the self discharge is appallling (like the junk supplied in
the FT817).
* Or you can have them where they do have a low
self discharge.
Leaving any form of battery in a discharged state
is the kiss of death. No if's and no but's.
Charge 'em up after a period of discharge and you
may get the volts, but the capacity is dramatically
reduced.
Ok I'm rambling on a bit....

Be careful about the voltage using NiMH, I think you will find that the AA
case is intended to be used with 1.5V cells.
You might also investigate if there is a diode in series with the AA pack
output to prevent charging of the alkaline cells. If you remove it you will
remove some voltage drop and be able to charge with the pack on the radio.

The DJ-G5 can operate from a variety of different voltages - it'll be
fine with rechargeables in it.

Both types of charger are available for the DJ-G5.
The AA cell pack for my Alinco DJ596 'had' a diode in series.
Jeff
Now you have gone and done it!
we will never hear the end of it from his boss!
I doubt that he declared this to him :)
Been there done that.
The AA case uses different contacts on the radio to use 1.5v cells so the
rechargeable batteries go "flat" prematurely.
I modified my case so it used the other terminal then the large capacity
rechargeable cells last for ages.

Apart from Li-ion where 50% charged in a freezer is a good way of
prolonging the shelf life. Storing a Li-ion rechargeable at 100% is an
ideal way of trashing the pack...
