You're 5 and 4 here OM.
You sound way off frequency. You should be on alt.test :)
I am having certain difficulties with posting follow-ups to this NG.
I am having no difficulties with posting to alt.test.
How would sending a test posting to alt.test would help me to resolve my
difficulties in posting to uk.radio.amateur?
--
Ian
Usenet is Usenet. If one group works, so should another. That sounds
like an ISP issue that you might need to take up with Demon.
Steve Terry
I say again, one more time for the benefit of those who can be bothered
to read...
I am having certain difficulties with posting follow-ups to this NG.
I am having no difficulties with posting to alt.test.
To this I can add (having made the above tests)...
It appears that I don't seem to be having too much difficulty making
posting new postings to this NG.
However, sometimes I DO seem to be able to post follow-ups to this NG,
but not every time.
All I'm trying to do is to find out what is presently working, and what
isn't. That (believe it or not) is what real radio amateurs do.
Take it up with Demon? You have to be joking! The Demon news server went
down for the second time about 30 minutes before they belatedly updated
the status message about the previous 12 day outage. And for that one,
it took them 4 days even to acknowledge that there WAS an outage. At the
moment, I'm collecting using the AIEO news server, but this seems to
have started playing tricks with my ability to send to different NGs.
Hence the test. Although all reports are welcome, those who don't like
it can lump it.
Also, FWIW, fellow refugees from Demon will probably find that Google
Groups also seem to be down. There are no NG postings for 4 Oct. The
whole of Usenet seems to be sliding into a black hole.
--
Ian
I think that you're suggesting that I embark on a TWoT. Anyway, this
might not be a Demon problem (well, not the current news server outage
problem). I'm trying to use AIEO, and it has suddenly started doing
funny things. As Google Groups are showing none of today's postings,
maybe AIEO is screwed too.
--
Ian
And I'll say it one more time for those who seem to have difficulties
understanding....
Usenet is Usenet, if you can post to one group, the software at your end
is working. Other (non-Demon users) can place follow-ups to uk.r.a.
without any problem. Other Demon users have reported problems. Ergo,
it is a Demon problem so take it up with them.
> To this I can add (having made the above tests)...
> It appears that I don't seem to be having too much difficulty making
> posting new postings to this NG.
So, something is screwed in the Demon servers for follow-up posts as
other non-Demon users are not seeing this problem.
> However, sometimes I DO seem to be able to post follow-ups to this NG,
> but not every time.
Again, it is a Demon server that is having problems.
> All I'm trying to do is to find out what is presently working, and what
> isn't. That (believe it or not) is what real radio amateurs do.
Indeed and it is clear it is a Demon problem so take it up with them.
> Take it up with Demon? You have to be joking!
If you don't like the service, vote with your cheque book/direct debit!!
> The Demon news server went
> down for the second time about 30 minutes before they belatedly updated

So now you are saying the Demon servers have been/are having problems.
As I said, it's a Demon problem so take it up with them.
> At the
> moment, I'm collecting using the AIEO news server, but this seems to
> have started playing tricks with my ability to send to different NGs.
> Hence the test. Although all reports are welcome, those who don't like

You've determined it's d Demon problem, you've stated the Demon servers
have been/are having problems so why would you need to post any more
'test' messages?
> Also, FWIW, fellow refugees from Demon will probably find that Google
> Groups also seem to be down. There are no NG postings for 4 Oct. The

Google groups down? That is the first good thing I've heard!
Try signing up for news.albasani.net easily currently the best free

next best free newsserver is probably news.motzarella.org
or if you are willing to spend a few bob, Berlins individual.net

You are openly admitting off topic posting which is a contravention of your

OMG, yet another one who can't read (or maybe one who can read, but
knows better than I do about why I needed to test post to this NG) - and
a TOP-POSTER TOO!!!!!
Regarding being 'off-topic', which 'off-topic' would that be? It was
certainly 'on-topic' for me.
And finally, regarding 'Complaints-To: ab...@demon.net', the fact that I
dared to send a perfectly justified test post to uk.radio.amateur is
probably the least of Demon's concerns at the moment.

Oh help a net copping b'tard....!
I've a sneaky feeling that something funny is happening in the internet
world. A couple of days after having been AWOL for 12 days, Demon's news
server (incoming) has packed up yet again. Google newsgroups are also
not showing anything since 3 Oct (but you can still post).
I'm trying taking news from AIEO but, after one day of using it, it too
stopped delivering news, and apparently stopping me from posting any
more. I did spot two recurring messages in my Demon Turnpike log file,
stating
Unexpected NEWS 5xx : 500 Too many rejected messages
Unexpected NEWS xxx :
It looks like I have upset AIEO somehow. I know that they do have limits
on usage etc, but I can't see what I have done to violate their Ts & Cs.
I have no idea what these 'Too many rejected messages' might be. Any
advice?
I do now notice that a trickle of incoming news (including Walt's above)
is beginning to appear. However, if things go on being so unreliable for
much longer, I reckon I'll have to switch on the rig, and become and
resume my rightful position as real on-the-air radio amateur.

Posts to uk.radio.amateur by news.aieo.org have been blocked by
aieo.org. Someone on here took umbrage at some posts that came via their
server and complained. Bit of a nuisance because I have to use
news.aieo.org since demon is misbehaving.
I get :-

Where do you get that message? I think that explains a lot. Starting
yesterday at Sat, 4 Oct 2008 14:11:05 +0100, I've had a three 'Article
Disposition Notifications' sent to my email inbox by Demon's
Turnpike_NNTP_Client. [I can't recall ever having these before.] These
all start:
Your article could not be posted

A 'hidden' Message Delivery Status notice follows, and includes:
Action: failed
Status: 5.0.0
Remote-MTA: dns; nntp.aioe.org

It would seem that that this is the same thing as you have.
All three messages refer to postings to uk.radio.amateur, which probably
(and justifies) explains the reason why I made a test posting
specifically in this NG, and not one of the Test NGs.
Do you have any further info on the blocking, and why?

The message was in the Turnpike log. I'd posted successfully to other
groups so I looked on the aioe website and found :-

Thanks. I've quickly looked through it. [I'll also have a look at my TP
log.]
We seemed go get banned by AIOE in July (I think I recall this being
said in UKRA), but then got reinstated. I didn't see anything about
being banned again.
AIOE seem keen to ban whole NGs if someone complains about a few
individuals who misbehave themselves. Maybe another news server would be
a better bet. Of course, if Demon would pull its finger out and fix
their problems (or, at least, let us customers know the true state of
play), we wouldn't have to faff around looking for alternatives.

You obviously know that Demon is totally down for incoming news
(although sending is OK). They seem to have given up trying to fix the
problem, and also abandoned any pretence of keeping the customer
informed.
Obviously, I am seriously considering permanently using a different news
service (and eventually, a different ISP). If I want binaries, it looks
as if I will have to pay for it. In the meantime, I've started using
AIOE, which is free.
Unfortunately, it appears that while I am able to post OK to some NGs
using AIOE, for I others (including uk.r.a) I have to switch back to
Demon. The only way to find out what the problem was to test post in the
relevant NGs.
Do you really have a problem with this? If so, what alternative course
of action do you suggest I should have adopted?

Try signing up for free news.albasani.net or news.motzarella.org
As you say for binaries you'll have to pay for a quality newserver
Steve Terry
As I said "In the meantime...."
When I did my test posting, I was unaware that AIOE was still blocking
posts to uk.r.a (and possibly some others). Total recall and
clairvoyance aren't my strong points these days.
>That's when it's working at all!
It hasn't packed up in the past few days.
>
>Try signing up for free news.albasani.net or news.motzarella.org
Could have done, but with AIOE, you simply add the name of the news
server to your list, and select it in the news configuration (no
registration necessary).
>
>As you say for binaries you'll have to pay for a quality newserver
I used to have one. It was called Demon!

Yet you couldn't see the error of your ways when you posted a test
message here.....
It's a pity that you still don't seem to understand why I made the test
posting. As I said in my first reply to you:
"I am having certain difficulties with posting follow-ups to this NG.
I am having no difficulties with posting to alt.test.
How would sending a test posting to alt.test would help me to resolve my
difficulties in posting to uk.radio.amateur?"
If you did answer my question, I must have missed it. My apologies.
But compared with some of the stuff posted in this NG, some may consider
that words such as "Test - ignore" make relatively interesting reading.

Ian
I don't think you did miss it as you replied to the message where I said
"Usenet is Usenet, if you can post to one group, the software at your end

Me to ;-)
You STILL don't get it, do you?
Are you possibly one of this new breed of radio amateurs who object when
someone puts out a call asking for a 'rig check' etc?
Maybe I lost count, but I only recall posting ONE test message which
made it to uk.r.a. The other one didn't (well, I didn't see it).
Demon incoming news is in the 'dead parrot' category.
Demon outgoing news is working OK.
For the time being I switched to AIOE, but found that AIOE blocks my
posts to uk.r.a (for reasons since explained to me).
So...
Until I get things better organised,
I'm using AIOE for receiving.
I'm using Demon for transmitting.
You know it makes sense.
