I have heard of the front end being "Muteked" what does this mean? and how
can I do it to my set, as I've heard it improves the front end.

Why should I take it to a service agent?
If I can get all the bits I can do it myself:-)

MuTek is a company here in Nottingham..
they sell receive amps and also other radio bits..
including 4 and 6Mtr dual band transverters.
the MuTek front end is a board for the 290 and lots of other rigs..
if you look in the 290 next to the battery copartment you will see where the
board fits...
not sure on the price sorry...
very easy to fit only power 12v and a coax link to the antenna then another
link to the rig...

IIRC to "Mutek" a VHF/UHF transceiver is to replace the receiver front end
with one that can cope with a wide dynamic range and retain a low noise
figure. In the main, "Mutek"-ing is carried out by board replacement.

Dan, Mutek are well known as manufacturers of the *best* RF front-ends
in the world. Japan's best are always improved by a Mutek board.
Having said that, the board you're referring to (SLNA 145sb?) is not
regarded as their very best, but still pretty good. An improvement in
noise factor and increased signal strength are the effects of fitting,
which appears to be straight forward, providing you know which end of
the soldering iron to grab hold of! You do......don't you :-)))

Oh yeah I sure do:-))
I build as much stuff as I can from computers (Never from PC world) to valve
amps, and that may supprise some of the older "Hams" becuase I'm 20, born in
an age of ready made "black boxes"
I think I will be able to find there address, and I'll get on to the task in
hand:-)

Glad to hear it. It's without doubt the best way to learn electronics.
People simply won't accept that it's possible to make equipment that
matches or exceeds the performance of the commercial stuff. It's nice to
use some of the far eastern gems, but it's great to work the world with
a 5W home made box.

I cant help you with the address, the last one I had pointed to
Holsworthy, Devon, but one of the other posters mentioned Nottingham.
