Actually it's quite common for soldiers to run amoke around base with
loaded guns, particularly those suffering post traumatic stress etc,
most death's don't get reported, mind you most aren't commited by
islamics dressed in nightshirts, rather squaddies who've had too much
pop.

The incident in Afghanistan last weekend is looking more like a
personal grudge/vendetta. I wouldn't be surprised if this turns out
the same.

A hell of a lot of shrinks (in my experience) were initially drawn to
the career as a result of serious pyscological problems they suffered
themselves. Problem is it's really down to them to self regulate their
behaviour which is a less than optimum solution.

He was born and raised in the US. Followed Islam like millions of
others. Sounds like he had been suffering constant hounding and
harassment by a whole bunch of psycho WT red necks he was caring for
and just snapped one night. I'm sure this wasn't the first time
someone has gone beserk in that community of 40 odd thousand service
personel (all armed and dangerous).

I could be wrong of course. Maybe he was just some mad "Muslam" and

Well, taking into account he

- was a lifelong Muslim
- was a devout Muslim
- was a regular mosque attendee
- wore traditional dress
- didn't want to serve in Afghnanistan
- shouted 'alley rucksack' before opening fire
- glorified suicide bombers on his blog

we should follow Barack Hussein Obama's suggestion about not jumping
to conclusions here.

for a shrink if you behave yourself and carry out good conduct in

They teach em the side on technique over there I think - left hand
bent and swinging behind to minimise recoil. Increases accuracy at
greater range. Of course you need to have the (metaphorical) balls to
stand up and do it in the first place, body armour helps.

"Shrinks" is not a reference to "physcologists" so experience of the latter
does not equate to experience of "shrinks".

I still contend that most people don't have cause to seek the help of a
"shrink" nor do I attach any social stigma to those that do.

Nor do I believe that everyone who displays anti-social and disruptive
behaviour has some mental problem. Some people are just not very nice
people, they end up in unhappy situations (out of work, divorced, separated
etc) and become even less socially acceptable. Why they start down this path
has been debated for years, I reckon it generally stems from an unhappy
childhood.

But the modern British legal system seems to be turning more and more to
the ethos of the former, ie giving and allowing swingeing punishments
for the most minor of offences and, once they've got your name in the
book, never really being forgiven for anything. I almost laugh out loud
each time I hear someone say that Britain is a Christian country.

But some do. You are correct that there should be no social stigma
attached. Perhaps it is time for you to realise that your advice to
others is good advice and advice you would be wise to follow yourself.

There are lots of nasty people in this world. There are not so many who
project their own problems onto newsgroups in such a way that leads to
every posting resulting in an argument and scoring pointless points
over others.

I've read a lot about you recently and what overwhelmingly comes through
is a denial of other viewpoints to the point that any "discussion"
degenerates into a slanging match. You are nearly always the one to
start it off.

You are clearly not getting the "strokes" you so desire but instead you
are becoming an object of ridicule. OK, you are getting answers but
these are invariably negative. How long can you feed on the brush-offs
before you finally crack and admit that these are not satisfying your
inner need?

Go and seek help ASAP please.

This is well intended advice but I know you will not take it as such.

Islam isn't fundamentally anymore "brutal" than several other religions but
they all (well most) seem to get "hijacked" from time to time by extremists.
Basically, it comes down to a lack of tolerance of other peoples' beliefs.
This manifests itself in many ways, sometimes bombs other times suggesting
that anyone who follows a religion is somehow mentally deranged.

If everyone could develop the security to allow others to hold different
views from themselves then strife based on religion would end (ditto
arguments about CW and D-Star).

Same could be said about any first degree. You don't really "study"
any subject in the majority of FE establishments these days (proper

What a misguided and unhelpful opinion you have Brian. You are mixing
cause and effect and half of it's the wrong way round. Oh and throw a
bit of Freud in at the end to make it look as if you are not the
incredible bullshitting man afterall.

I'm off out now to stand in the rain and think about a few friends and
relations. I may even pop along to the service - I dare say there'll
be a few "muslems" in the congregation quite a few atheists, and
hopefully a shed load of agnostics.

You know bugger all about Islam mate. Bugger all about Christian
history and bugger all islamic law, crime and punishment.

The Ten commandments are not Christian they are Jewish matey. The
Bible's full of them - particulary proverbs. as is the Qur’an.

The Christian code is more simple. It's all about:

- Faith (in t'son, father and his holy spookiness)
- living a humble life (lent)
- Charity (giving to the needy, Christmas presents, Pudsey and all
that bollocks)
- Learning, Contemplation, Pilgrimage etc. (Lourdes, Santiago etc)
- oh and the power of prayer (includes fellowship etc)

There's five of them - you see where this is going.?... I hope.

A small minority of inbred hill billy muslims believe in a 6th Pillar
and I'm told a few Catholics (mainly) still believe in blowing up
police and civies alike at various places around the Christian world.
ETA, Taliban, PIRA - same f&ckers really mainly interested in land
power and politics.

Something like 2000 people around the world were killed last month by
Muslims following the teachings of their holy book to 'smite them
wherever you find them; take their heads from their bodies' (or
whatever the exact phrase is).

I suspect the Christian score was rather less.

All of which have counterparts in Islam. In fact, some Moslems even believe
that Jesus is the son of God (to most he is, I think, a "messenger of God").

Islam is not fundamentally the restrictive, overbearing, religion which is
portrayed in the media. True, it is has been "driven" that way by some of
its leaders for their own ends but that happens in most religions.

One wonders if you've even actually spoken to a Moslem or visited a Moslem
country. I suspect not or, if you did, you didn't take the trouble to learn
anything.

Both become extremists when someone hijacks their religion and uses it to
further their own twisted agenda.

Neither then require much of an excuse to kill even members of their own
overall religion, let alone one which has a few more differences.

It will be interesting to see what comes of this Ft Hood case. I've a

All religion is fictional bullshit. A way to 'control' the masses. Only
the atheists are truely free.

If you want a laugh, ask a Catholic librarian why the Bible is in the

So true.

There are always those who feel "badly done to" by the world. They often go
on to stir up trouble and end up in a sorry state- out of work or unhappy in
their work, unemployable, in unhappy relationships (if they are even in a
relationship), etc. etc. Basically, just angry and bitter. They will, given
the chance, spin a tale of woe to explain why they've never quite made it,
even confabulate something they can use to suggest they have made it.

I recall someone (Walter Raleigh?) observing that most of the stirrers on
here seemed to be at the lower end of the employment ladder (assuming they
were employed), seemed not to have a happy family like etc. I think that is
pretty accurate. Makes you wonder just how people can live like that.

See you at the weekend?

I prefer the Anti-Pascal wager myself. Which, along with common sense,
proves the Pascal Wager wrong.

"Suppose we grant that there is indeed some small chance that God
exists. Nevertheless, it could be said that you will lead a better,
fuller life if you bet on his not existing, than if you bet on his

Moslem is an older, alternate, spelling. I believe the two came to use after
one of the early (even first) "split" in Islam. One was broadly "Persian"
(now Iran) and the other the rest). The Persian usage was Moslem but Muslim
is the more common. I simply used the less common spelling.

See, there is more to this than meets the eye.

The "splits" in Islam are not unlike the many splits in the Christian
church, Catholic (several versions), Protestant, and the many others who
have come along over the years. The Jews have similar sects, including one
which believes that Jesus was the Messiah.

We are all sons of God mate. Jesus was a prophet - current thinking*
is that the jesus myth was based on quite a large number of Jewish
seperatists and revolutionaries. The Romans and the Jews put an awful
lot of his like to death around about 2000 years ago.

*not just current. There is a famous quote from Pope Pious around
600AD which goes something like "What wealth this myth of Christianity
has brought us" depending on the translation. Can be taken a number of
ways I feel.

You can say that again. Actually it was driven by the west. Started in
Iran (what a f&ck up that was) repeated in Afghanistan when the
soviets invaded, resulted in a bunch of pampered yet highly restricted
Saudi youths rebelling is spectacular fashion. As usual us Brits have
to sort it all out with a large amount of US firepower.

Not sure from the thread whether this is addressed to me, but I
confirm I've never spoken to a Moslem what ever they are.
I have, however, travelled extensively in Islamic countries - egypt,
tunisia, moroco, greater Manchester. And spent a great deal of time
with muslims and christians alike, doesn't take long for a
conversation to turn to religion I can tell you.

There an awful lot of words which are either transliterations or
phonetic representations of words from a language which uses a non-Roman
script.

The 'British' spelling could vary a lot, depending on how we 'hear' the
foreign word. This could vary depending on the local accent of the
foreign language, and also on the accent of the British speaker (or
'hearer').

For example, if the foreign word sounded like 'mite', I would write
'mite' (or even 'might'), but a Cockney might hear it as (and write)
'mate'.

And then, in some areas where the foreign language is spoken, they might
pronounce the word more like 'meet'. Both the Cockney and I would hear
'meet', but I might write 'meet', and he might write 'meat'.

Atheists are just as bad.

Look up Agnosticin the dictonary. If you are prepared to have faith in
gravity and electromagetic radiation (both of which don't actually
exist in any real sense in our dimension) then why disbelieve in a
higher power not of the real world or dimension which links us all?

BTW I'm not talking about some old chap with a long white beard who
comes out at Christmas........

Your lack of education is showing.

Pascal contributed to many fields which, over the years, I've had reason to
study. This "Pascal's Wager" was something I learned somewhere along that
journey.

I assume you've not heard of Pascal's triangle or bothered to learn why the
unit of pressure is the Pascal. I suppose neither are required knowledge for
the non-technical like yourself.

best not look in the mirror then mate. I've never seen such a obvious
case of transference.

I'm not scoring points. I have a genuine concern for you, but you
won't sort it out on this NG. You won't believe it course and that's
to be expected. Truth is you must realise it for yourself. Others are
just their to point it out to you. There is something up with you

Oh dear, you lost your job???? My sister in law managed to keep a hold
or hers, mind you she is head of department at an independant school
where a large proportion of kids have very hard working (muslim)
parents who put their familiy before anything else.

Lot of kids were pulled out of my boys school - when your dad's a
lawyer, banker or architect and your mum does lunch this last year
must have been a nightmare. Luckily their school is very well run with
an excellant head who managed to keep it afloat. Fees went up (for
those who stayed) and teachers salaries went down. My wife and I are
lucky in that our chosen professions actually benefit when times are
bad. We've both been premoted recently.

If I can be of any assitance in your time of need, do hestitate ;-)

Some one had Brian a dictionary turned to the word faith please.

Just as a matter of precedure. Before you can have faith you first of
all must believe. Agnostics believe and have faith. Atheists just
stick their fingers in their ears and go LA LA LA LA LA LA whatever
will be will be ! Bit like poor Mathematicians.

I sincerely hope things have moved on a bit since Pascal's time. It's
not about bets mate. It's about belief and faith. It's up to you to
find out what to believe though - once you've cracked that you can
start to practise a little faith (in yourself and others mainly).
