Hi all i was fitting a CTCSS pcb to my radio, one of the small coax cables came off a pcb on the bottom of the radio,i dont know where tho,the other end goes to the psu,if the rig is the right way up the wire joins to the psu rear top left terminal with a couple of other wires, all i measure at the psu terminal is 0.3v,any ideas what voltage it should be? TIA de m3vuv.

That's what happens when you play with deteriorating 1970's technology.
If you've got the manual, there should be a schematic in there. The PSU
in that radio is quite clever, it takes mains down to 12V then it all
goes into a DC-DC converter with 24V for the PA and the varicap tuning
as well as a few -ve rails for the receiver bias. A lot of the internal
wiring used wire-wrap onto posts which is probably very brittle after
40+ years.

You'll probably find a manual on Rigpix if you don't have a paper one.

i am fully aware of what you say,i have the service manual but it doesent tell me what i need to know,ie what pcb's get a feed from the top rear left hand side pin on the rear of the psu when viewed from the top front,if i can get that info it should be easy, cheers 73 m3vuv.

I don’t have a service manual / circuit for the TS700G, only the earlier
700A model. However, I suspect, in this area they are similar.

The ‘coax’ is actually screened wire- similar at first look perhaps.

There are two screened cables in that area on the circuit I have, one is
labelled R8, the other end goes to the Rx / NB unit - both ends labelled
R8. Usually the pins are marked on the PCB. On the PSU, R8 is at the
junction of R16 and 17.

The other is T8, it goes to the AF unit. Again pin T8. On the PSU T8, is
the junction of R20 & 21.

Again, the info is from a 700A circuit but, if you check, you may find it
is the same.

Good old radios. I have one of the digital display versions lurking
(TS700S?)

cheers brian, mine have no markings on them, they are soldered to what look like the male half of a bullet connector, any idea what voltage should be on it at what mode etc,all the radio does is squeel from the speaker at the moment, unless thats feedback with the lna i fitted, diddnt do it before tho,73 Paul m3vuv.

Ah, I thought I’d included that, sorry:

(Also, I think it is TB - the print isn’t clear.)

The other end of TB / T8 goes to three places:

A normally open contact of Relay 2.

R16 (via a pin on the PCB) on the AF board. There should be a group of
three pins near R16. Two on the edge of the board, a third set back. The
centre conductor connects to the pin on the edge furthest from the corner.
The other pin on the edge is the screen. ( third pin is unrelated)

The TX lamp / bulb.

Remember, I have the 700A manual, so check before you connect anything. If
it looks the same, you should be ok.

TS-700A was the US market version of the 700G that covered 144-148MHz.
There was an earlier (no suffix version) with a different front panel
layout (no repeater shift).

Sounds about right.

Either way, I suspect much of the circuitry is common.

That would be right because the circuit in the handbook for my 700G
never matched the VFO/mixer board. IIRC mine used discrete devices for
the mixer and the handbook used some analog IC. But it's 20 years since
I got rid of it. Another thing I vaguely remember is that the switching
PSU produced some interesting noise sidebands on the signal.

Just remembered I do still have a bit of it left - the crystal
calibrator. I took this out to fit a RX preamp in the space.

Since you are using an obviously forged post in order to perpetuate
your persistent lies and slurs against me, is it safe to assume that
the aforementioned forgery emanated from your very own keyboard?

You let me down badly Jim. I was hoping you would spot that one of
Brian's original cache of M3's was a QRO fan.

"projects at the moment include a hf linear using 2x572 valves in
grounded grid mode"

Anyway, here's hoping to spot a nice cheap TS-700G at the next
Horncastle rally.

LOL!
