For Sale two genuine vintage 1920's Crystal Sets in good working order. One
was made by BTH in Rugby and carries the Official BBC/Post Office stamp
authorising its use and the other is a genuine "Pirate" set that does not
carry that stamp but is marked "Made for Halfords" and is actually in my
opinion a more interesting specimen because of its slightly "naughty"
origin. Both are in nice wooden cabinets with a genuine galena crystal and
cats whisker of the period.

Offers ( or request for any other info ) for one or both to I...@gwr.org or
phone 01789 268863.

The going price for these two years ago was £150, possibly
more now. Consult, "Radio! Radio!"

Sorry Gareth,

Do you mean that the price for two of these was Ł150, years ago,
or do you mean that two years ago, the price for these, was Ł150 each?

As a youth I had a crystal set which had a cat's whisker as described, and I
wish now that I had kept it.

Each.

There was a series of radio auctions down in Shaftesbury,
a couple of years ago or so where the widow of a maniac who had
had old radios from floor to ceiling along every wall in every
room of the house just wanted shot of it all.

£150 for Xtal sets. Bush DAC90's about £100, although
one in white Bakelite went for ISTR £300.

The matched pair of GEC two-valve radio and two-valve
amplifier went for £400 each.

Ordinary steam radios from the 1950's were all being knocked
down at £1, no interest in them at all.

One of the round Wells-Coates designed Ecko radios, with no
dial glass, a torn dial, no speaker cloth and no knobs went for £350 which
seemed to
support what I'd heard that they were of interest to Art Deco
collectors even if they didn't work.

If you consider what people will pay for so-called antiques and for other
ornaments, £150 for a xtal set in good condition is not unreasonable.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I would rather have a vintage
crystal set on the sideboard than any number of Lladro figurines, for
example!
