I have recently seen three FT707's that have been modified for CB use
being advertised for sale at what I think are high prices. The
modification involves replacing some of the 28Mhz crystals and hopefully
re-tuning so its generally not done unless one intends to transmit
illegally.

Anyway I was wondering why three popped up at once. Is it just that the
sun is quiet and so there is no DX on 27mhz. Or has OFCOM started out
enforcing the law? I can't see any prosecutions anywhere?

Perhaps its just that some one saw the first one and though "ooh I can
also get £200 for my rig"

The FT707 commands stupid prices for such an old radio. It's appeal
seems to be that it can be put on 27MHz by changing xtals. But most
amateur radios will run 100W on 27MHz often with a single link removal
or with "widebanding" software. So the FT-707 is harder to convert and
has a single true VFO. Memories only come with an add-on memory unit.

It doesn't make sense to me. You see plenty of 35+ year old radios with
stupidly high prices being asked. Madness because many have custom chips
no longer available, if one fails the rig is effectively useless. Some
optimist has been regularly offering an FT-840 (25 years old or os) for
£450 starting price on eBay. Why would you punt when you can get an
FT-450 with a 2yr warranty for £550. A better, more modern radio radio
and with 50MHz.

Somebody must pay these prices.

I can recall FT707 being sold new supplied with 27MHz back in 1981,
usually brought in from overseas or via some of the grey import dealers.
The was also McKnight Crystals who would make you a set within 48 hours.

Happy homebrewing, reverse-engineering days.

I know! My FT707 died not so long ago. The counter board fails on many.
I have a TS430 which is newer, not much newer, cost me less than the
ft707s are fetching. It is still 100Watts, but general coverage RX ,
proper FM and top band. The only downside is it only has IF shift where
as the 707 is full variable bandwidth, but the receiver in the ts430 is
slightly better. I believe it does transmit on 27Mhz but never tried.
