Mob sparks siege drama

HUNDREDS of angry residents converged outside the homes of alleged
drug dealers on their estate in six hours of violent confrontation in
which a petrol bomb was thrown at police.

Sixty police officers, seven police dogs and the force helicopter were
called to the incident involving 200 people last night.

Worried parents said the community on Huntingdon's Oxmoor estate was
"taking a stand against the drug addicts", who they claim leave dirty
needles lying around and inject themselves in the streets.

John Kennett, of Garner Court, said: "The whole estate has come out
tonight because we have had enough. This is a stand against drugs. Our
children have to live here."

Stella Duffy, who has lived in Selby Court for 17 years, said: "The
police have allowed heroin addicts to live in our street for years and
we are sick to death of it."

Police were called to a house in Lavender Court at about 6pm after
reports that three people had barricaded themselves in for protection
after their windows were smashed.

Insp Adrian Hutchinson said the two officers were faced with a large
hostile crowd and when the residents refused to disperse further
vehicles were called.

Extensive damage was caused to the house and police escorted the
occupants to safety.

He said: "We tried to talk to the crowd, but regrettably they would
not leave the area."

As more people joined the disturbance, including women and young
children, a second house in Garner Court was attacked.

Alison Kennett, who lives near to the house in Garner Court, said her
five-year-old son had pricked himself with a dirty syringe he picked
up in the park.

A number of people were arrested for offences which included violent
disorder, affray and assault on police.

These included 10 men, two teenagers and three women.

They are all from Huntingdon and have been held at police stations
across the county.

During the evening a petrol bomb was thrown at police. It failed to
ignite but several police cars were damaged. Two police officers were
assaulted and one was taken to hospital for treatment for a shoulder
injury.

I used to live near Huntingdon and the Oxmore Estate was famously rough.
Apparently the local council were given money by various London boroughs to
build it on the condition that they could send a quota of their families up
to live on it. No prizes for guessing what sort of families they sent! It
has had a drug problem for at least the last 15 years and probably before
that. In fact I think the local AIDS stats were comparable with Glasgow.

I would do a similar thing to these residents if it was happening in my home
area. If the police refuse to police then there is a vacuum that will be
filled eventually. Interestingly many predominately asian areas have taken
similar stands against prostitution in their neighbourhoods.

One day as I was walking past the bridge in Dolphin's Barn,
By the old canal I saw some children round a car,
In the back they were shooting up smack,
And I had a birds eye view,
When I dialled for help,
Told me there's nothing we can do.

Both sides of the river clearly to be seen,
Down along O'Connell St. and up to Stephen's Green,
Heroin sold openly there was no need to hide,
The drug squad were outnumbered,
It seemed like there hands were tied.

John Whacker Humphries, he's a family man,
Him and his wife, they give their children everything they can,
Faced with the scourge of heroin, they'd not accept defeat,
The joined the Concerned Parents,
to put the dealers off the street.

They called on dealers houses and ordered them to quit,
Time and time again they warned, we've had enough of it,
Dirty needles on our doorways,
Junkies hanging all about,
Keep on dealing heroin and you're going to be moved out.

From St. Teresa's gardens,
To the flats in Ballymun,
Concerned Parents action had the dealers on the run,
They swore they'd stand together until the drugs were stopped,
And I will never understand why they got their knuckles rapped.

They were rounded up and charged,
With crimes against the State,
Brought before the Green Court to decide their fate,
Denied a trial by jury and there was no bail,
The Concerned Parents were taken off to jail.

Sitting in the gallery with family, friends and wives,
I strained to hear who told the truth and who was telling lies,
Dealers, junkies and police on the prosecution side,
I swear to God that's what I saw before my very eyes.

Whacker Humphries took the dealers on,
And he fought them tooth and nail,
A dozen well armed soldiers brought him to Portlaoise jail,
He tried to protect his children, found guilty of a crime,
One man gets a pension another man gets time.

This morning I went walking out by Dolphin's Barn,
I heard a small bird whisper, mind you don't come to harm.

Interesting post. Look like Paulsgrove fever (aka Underclass summer riot
estate) has struck early.

Pity we can't just deport them to Australia any more.

Isn't that the same throughout East Anglia?

Sink 'London overspill' housing estates?
