Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) early Wednesday invaded southern and
eastern Gaza Strip and occupied Yasser Arafat airport, after destroying
three bridges linking south and north Gaza as well as the only power
station in the strip and knocking out water pipelines in what the IOF
called "Operation Summer Rains," driving thousands of Palestinian
civilians to evacuate their homes looking for safety and paralyzing
civilian life in the densely-populated and poverty-ridden Mediterranean
coastal strip.
Dismissing calls by Russia and the United Nations Secretary General,
Kofi Annan, for restraint and by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice
to "give diplomacy a chance," Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on
Wednesday insisted on military action saying that Israel wouldn't balk
at "extreme action" to bring home a soldier captured by Palestinian
anti-occupation activists.
Ruling out negotiations, Olmert insisted that, "the age of restraint has
come to an end," and "gave an order to military leaders - for
comprehensive and ongoing military action," he told parliament on
Tuesday.
Palestinian chief negotiator and lawmaker, Saeb Erakat, said Israel
wants to reoccupy the Gaza Strip and the capture of the Israeli
corporal, Gilad Shalit, was only a pretext.
Former Palestinian deputy premier and Foreign Minister lawmaker Nabil
Shaath on Tuesday voiced a similar statement.
Israel was planning a military invasion of Gaza to stop the launch of
primitive home-made Palestinian rockets before the Israeli soldier was
captured, Shaath told the Qatar-based Arabic satellite television
station, al-Jazeera.
Israeli media reported an imminent military operation in Gaza a week
before the capture of the dual Israeli-French soldier Shalit, 19.
Saeb Erakat told al-Jazeera, on Wednesday that Israel, by destroying the
electricity grid in Gaza was violating a Palestinian-Israeli agreement
with the European Union (EU), whereby it was agreed to keep power out of
military action.
Erakat added that Israel’s destruction of the bridges and roads and
other infrastructure in Gaza indicates it was reoccupying the Gaza
Strip.
He stressed that "We are unarmed civilians and not an army," as the
Israeli media is trying to portray the Palestinians.
The international contacts that are being conducted intensively by
President Mahmoud Abbas for the world community to intervene and stop
the Israeli aggression were fruitless, he added.
IOF sealed off and banned entry to and exit from the Gaza Strip on
Tuesday, besieging President Abbas, Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh and
top officials of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) as leading
anti-occupation activists went underground.
Palestinian presidential security adviser Jibril al-Rjoub arrived in
Cairo on Tuesday via Jordan and met with the Egyptian FM Ahmed Abu el-
Gheit, intelligence chief Omar Sulaiman and presidential adviser Osama
el-Baz.
Panic Grips Palestinian Civilians
The invasion came shortly after Palestinian security forces deployed
near the Gazan border town of Rafah said they were ordered out by the
IOF.
Thousands of Palestinian civilians evacuated their homes in Rafah and
other communities looking for safety as the Israeli tanks and troops
rolled into the southern Gaza Strip under the cover of the US-made F-16s
early Wednesday.
Before daybreak Wednesday IOF warplanes flew low over Gaza city, causing
sonic booms and breaking windows.
Men, women and children, packed into rickety carts and cars fled border
areas of southern Gaza in fear of their lives after Israeli troops
rolled into the territory.
"We're going someplace safe. We saw the tanks coming and we decided to
leave before anything else happens," said Mohammed Abu Zakr, arriving in
the southern city of Rafah accompanied by two female relatives and
several young children, AFP reported.
Gazan Infrastructure Targeted
Much of the northern Gaza Strip was plunged into darkness after Israeli
war planes hit the power station, three bridges, water pipelines and a
road in a series of night-time raids.
Flames poured into the night sky from the power plant in central Gaza.
Grabbed by what Anshel Pfeffer described in The Jerusalem Post on Monday
as the "Entebbe Syndrome," Olmert ruled out negotiations and rejected a
Palestinian demand to free 400 women and minors among more than 9,800
Palestinian detainees in the IOF jails, dashing the hopes of both the
Palestinian families and the Israeli family of the "missing" soldier.
The IOF reported corporal Gilad Shalit "missing" following a daring
Palestinian attack, in which two Palestinians were killed when they
attacked an IOF unit protecting the Israeli-Egyptian border crossing of
Karm Abu Salem (known to Israelis as Kerem Shalom), after killing two
Israeli soldiers and wounding four others.
Russia on Tuesday was seriously concerned over the dangerous development
of the situation around the Gaza Strip, Russian Foreign Ministry
spokesman Mikhail Kamynin said.
"The situation on the Palestinian territories and in the Palestinian-
Israeli relations, regrettably, is already heated. It is apparent that
the force operation in Gaza can lead to numerous human victims and will
be fraught with the gravest consequences for the future of Palestinian-
Israeli settlement," he said.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has called on the Israeli government "to
refrain from tough scenarios and try to find a solution within political
bounds."
Search for Missing Recruit in West Bank
Separately in Gaza, anti-Israeli occupation activist Hamza Muhareb, 21,
was killed and five Palestinians were wounded in a massive explosion
that demolished a car near the residence of President Abbas in Gaza on
Tuesday.
Meanwhile the security situation in the West Bank was heating up.
IOF said overnight Wednesday that the Israeli army recruit Eliyahu
Oshri, a settler of the illegal Jewish colony of Itamar near the
northern West Bank city of Nablus, was missing, confirming a report by
the Popular Resistance Committees (PRC) it had captured Oshri.
IOF sources they believe Oshri or his body could be somewhere in or
around Ramallah.
The IOF sealed off Ramallah, the home of the PNA leadership, by military
roadblocks and checkpoints early Wednesday and massive searches were
being conducted by the IOF troops.

A statement by Norman G. Finkelstein upon publication of Beyond Chutzpah
Professor Alan Dershowitz of Harvard University is currently best known
for
his advocacy of the "most excruciating" torture against terrorist suspects
such as a "needle being shoved under the fingernails." The alleged purpose
of this torture is to extract a truthful confession but its real
consequence, as human rights organizations have pointed out, is to produce

Dershowitz has applied a variant of this truth-seeking technique -- less
physically painful but no less excruciating -- to prospective publishers

Beyond Chutzpah, which offers a critical examination of Israel's human
rights record and Dershowitz's defense of it. Enlisting one of the most
powerful law firms in the country after his personal initiatives proved
unsuccessful, Dershowitz has repeatedly threatened to bankrupt highly

Sources in Hamas and Fatah said that some "small changes" had
been made to the document to give Hamas wriggle room. "All the obstacles
were removed and an agreement was reached on all the points of the prisoners'
document," Rawhi Fattouh, a senior Abbas aide, said the initialling of the
accord.
Mr Fatthouh said that Mr Abbas and Ismail Haniyeh, the Prime
Minister, would formally announce the deal later in the day. A Hamas
spokesman confirmed an agreement was reached.
Officials close to the negotiations said that Mr Abbas and Mr
Haniyeh drafted a platform based on the manifesto, accepting a Palestinian
state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Such a two-state solution to the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict would be in line with Fatah's recognition of
Israel.
But the officials also said that the agreement stipulated that
moves towards statehood, including Arab initiatives seeking peace with
Israel and international resolutions on the conflict, must serve Palestinian
interests - which could allow Hamas to reject, on those grounds, any
accommodation with Israel, or recognition of the Jewish state.
With the Palestinans preparing for a possible Israeli offensive
in Gaza following the kidnapping of an Israeli soldier, there appears to be
little chance that the agreement will lead to a rapid thawing of relations
between Hamas and the Israelis.
Palestinian bulldozers blocked roads in northern Gaza with sand
piles, bracing for a possible Israeli invasion after the abduction of a
young Israeli corporal in a dawn raid on Sunday. The bulldozers, operated by
Palestinian militant groups, left small spaces in the sand piles to allow
cars to pass slowly.
"We are ready to confront any stupid act that the Zionists might
commit," said Abu Obeida, spokesman for Hamas' military wing. "We are well
prepared and God willing, we are not going to welcome them with flowers."
Israel has said that leaders of the ruling Hamas movement could
become assassination targets, including the group's supreme chief Khaled
Meshaal, who lives in exile in Damascus.

These are all very good topics for discussion.
We have a colony of Amish farms close to where I live. They are usually
very nice people, although the lifestyle is very strict for those who stay
with the group. A surprising thing is that they are the largest growers of
marijuana in our state, so they have electricity to the top of their barns
for that cash crop. They came to this decision when they saw how many users
are attracted to the drug and how it could help them finance the health care

meet and marry other Amish people for marriage and establishing a healthier
population. The number of deformities has improved in some places since that

The children often leave and return for a limited number of times. Most of
them go to live among the "English" (they call Americans that) to try out
drinking, smoking, dating, etc, before they make their decision about
whether to stay with the community. They hire the children out to local
farmers, and they do drive and have a social life, including dating of the
English, at this time. It is not an easy life by any means.
I have attended several weddings (brides in black) and funerals (all women
wear white) , and they have allowed my students to visit in their homes, and
to give care for the sick. Their products are gorgeous: furniture,
delicious and fattening food, and beautiful handwork. The coloful quilts
are sold to the public, but they use only ecru color in their homes. The
products are popular and expensive, but very popular. We see many of them
in the cardiovascular units in our hospitals.
We also have Mennonites, who have an upscale life style with telephones and
cars--- huge black cars are their trademark. This group of people are
usually quite wealthy, as opposed to the Amish. Most of the young people
in this group attend high school and college, and the Amish quite education
at the eighty grade.

The Shaker life style is austere and hard to handle. They do not have sex,
thus no children. Any children born are called "mistakes of faith", but
accepted well by the communicants. They live in huge dormitory-style
buildings, with women and men sides--all with separate entrances/exits and
completely separate from the other.
I like the Shaker style furniture with its simple lines and lovely wood.
They also create lovely baskets, musical recordings (vocal without
instruments or reeds or instruments of natural things, I have a couple of
lovely CD that I play often. :Like the Amish they are farmers primarily,
and live amongst crops, animals, and in large acreage farms. It is very
popular everywhere in the USA and other places as well.
They nearly died out in recent years, but they do have new members at this
times, so they may very well survive into the future. If one wants a very
different life style, this is the way. A tour of their premises is a nice
thing to do, as the simple way of living is very appealing.

It is about time, that it is recognized that they have been not willing to
be partners in a peace process. The religion is practiced sporadically
there and very negative. The new brand of terrorists have been inhabiting
the territories in recent times, esp. with the election of Hamas. If they
choose to participate it will make things easier for everyone, but it
doesn't look promising. The current conditions with the standoff after
killing two soldiers and kidnapping one, along with the killing of settlers
has to recognized by the real Palestinians as the major cause of their
problems.
BTW, I was not the person who called them "godless people", I was the one
who the taxi driver in Jordan complained to about the number and presence of
so many Palestinians in that country. They are disliked and never given
much there--far worse than the conditions "could" be in a separate space of
their own.
I will be celebrating the Fourth of July with my family here, and loving
every minute!!
