I used to know a David Curl in the Cambridge Labour students - could
this be the same person? He was quite left-wing, but got defeated by
Mark Leonard (ex Demos, now Foreign Policy Centre) in election for
CoLS Chair in March 1994.

I think you're right; I think in 1995 there were two Tory candidates,
neither of whom got elected, a Labour candidate and a Lib Dem
candidate, both of whom got elected. So the Tory gain would
be a gain from Labour, and the Lib Dem would indeed be a hold.
But I can't remember off the top of my head.
