Hi guys,

Names jay, I'm 21 and was diagnosed back in 99 since then i have had 5 grand
mal seizures and a few petit mal ones as well...

I'm on 2x200mg twice a day of epilim at the mo and the doc wants me to move
to epilim chrono... i was wondering if there are any other side effects than
the usual ones with epilim.

since I've been on them ( about a year) i have gained about 2.5 stone and
some slight rashes, very slight hair loss (thankfully not noticeable to
anyone but me ) and some nasty headaches...

I think they're the same but one is (presumably) coated to aid a timed
release.

I would guess that any difference you might notice would be if, on the
non-chrono, you get some of the side-effects at the same time each day
(like the headaches, let's say). Perhaps with the Chrono they will be
weaker but spread out over a longer period of the day...

Hello Jay,

I suppose the general message is that we may react differently as
individuals to particular drugs for our epilepsy.

Taking this into account, I share the following; I have been diagnosed with
temporal lobe epilepsy causing partial seizures and absences, untreated
leading to grand-mal seizures.

Since July 1999 until February this year I was on epilim chrono 900mg per
day, the last 9 months of taking it I was also on 900mg of gabapentin,
building to 2400mg of gabapentin, my current dose !

I was taken off it because I was still experiencing partial seizures and
absences, tiredness and nausea, and also the weight gain you mention. So I
guess that the only difference between epilim and epilim chrono is the time
release aspect of the chrono variety.

Hope my comments help? I recommend that you discuss further your clear
concerns with your neurologist.

Best regards

John

Hi guys just ab it of an update really...

i've been on the chrono since good friday and so far so good....

the headaches are weaker and the muscle twiches are graduly getting less

i've lost a bit of weight but i dont know if that was due to me being sick
all of last week ;o)

the rashes are still the same maybe slightly better and the hair loss seems
to have stopped ;o)

hopefully with time i can drop the dose and get back to a normal 21 year
olds life...

Jay.

A very valid concern felt by many people is what side effects they are
likely to experience. A glance at the most common or important side effects
may look rather alarming. However, it should be remembered that although any
of these side effects is a possibility, the majority of people will
experience few or relatively mild side effects.

Some of the side effects affecting the central nervous system, such as
drowsiness or dizziness, may be more apparent in the early days of taking
the medication while the body is adjusting to taking drugs. Once this has
happened, these should lessen or disappear completely. If that does not
happen, then it is importanct to talk to the doctor again who may suggest
changing either the dosage or the drug itself.

Sodium valproate (1973)
Valproic acid (1993)

AKA:- EPILIM / EPILIM CHRONO / CONVULEX

For all forms of epilepsy
Severe hepatic toxicity a rare side-effect in young children. Pancreatitis,
renal failure, drowsiness, cognitive disturbance, aggressiveness, tremor,
weakness, encephalopathy, thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, aplastic anaemia,
hair thinning and hair loss and weight gain.

Hi guys...

me again ;o)

just a bit of an update and to say thanks for your support...

everything seems to be going smoothly now I'm on the epilim chrono and
hopefully that's how it will stay...

they only thing i have noticed now they have had a while to get into my
system is that the tops of my arms have become very dry and that slight
patches of eczema have appeared, i suffered from eczema when i was a child
and slightly when going through puberty but nothing since i was about
13-14... just wondered if it was a side effect that anyone else had
noticed...?

Take care,

Jay D
