The Yoga for Health Foundation
Yoga for people with M.E. Yoga is uniquely able to assist people with M.E.
Gentle holistic activities, and breathing and meditation techniques, improve
and help maintain energy flow with minimal physical effort. Fitness, clarity
of mind and exercise tolerance are improved whilst the risk of relapse is
reduced. An end to power cuts!
lckwell Bury is the Yoga for Health Foundation's residential centre.
Standing on an ancient site, the manor house has been progressively improved
over nearly twenty years thanks to the generosity of many individual members
and trusts. 'The Bury is a tranquil haven from the busy world outside, set
in its own gardens bordering a lake, where people come to learn and practise
yoga, or to rest, reflect or recuperate from illness.
lckwell Bury is a teaching centre for everyone - all are welcome whatever
their physical ability. People with disabilities share 'The Bury' with many
able-bodied people, creating an integrated and constantly changing
community. The centre has been modified extensively to allow wheelchair
access and easy bathing.
Since 1978 it has been a 'home from home' for many thousands of people with
chronic illnesses such as multiple sclerosis, M.E., asthma, cancer,
arthritis and Parkinson's disease.
Courses for people with M.E. The Yoga for Health Foundation has developed a
specific five day course for people with M.E. at its residential centre at
lckwell Bury, near Biggleswade and Bedford. Every aspect of your stay has
been worked through with senior advisors from the 'M.E. world' to ensure
that it is as enjoyable, comfortable and, most important of all, as
beneficial as possible.
What is yoga?
Yoga has been developed over many thousands of years to promote good health
and inner peace. It combines gentle holistic activities designed to:
>- maintain fitness, suppleness and muscle tone,
>- strengthen.the body's own self-healing powers, with breathing, meditation
and visualisation which help:
>. energise both body and mind, reduce stress, improve concentration and
clarity, and control and calm the mind, helping you work, relax and sleep
more deeply. As such, it affords strong protection against illnesses of all
kinds. Originating in the East, yoga is now practised by millions of people
worldwide to maintain and improve the quality of their lives.
For people with strongly-held religious beliefs yoga helps to strengthen
those beliefs and to get closer to their God. For people without religious
beliefs, yoga helps to maintain physical and mental fitness and health, to
control and still the mind, and to develop deeper, more fulfilling
relationships.
Yoga: You will be taught specific activities - mainly seated or lying,
breathing techniques, relaxation And meditation to lay the foundations of a
self-help programme you can follow when back home. At the end of the course
you will be given an audio cassette comprising a short activity session and
a relaxation exercise as extra support.
Discussion: You will be invited to participate in daily discussions on
coping strategies, self help and self responsibility. The power of. living
by these principles to:
>- help reduce or control symptoms, raise energy and stamina, and to restore
a sense of purpose. Working as part of a group of people who, like you, are
taking positive steps to take back control of their illness is a rare
opportunity and powerful therapy in itself.
Qualification: People with M.E. should only participate in one of our
courses if they are able to engage in light sustained exercise without
triggering a relapse.
Meals: Every attempt is made to provide meals which are helpful to people
with M.E. The food is vegetarian and designed to minimise the risk of food
intolerance. Special food regimes can usually be catered for if requested
and agreed well in advance.
Because many people with M.E. have blood sugar and sleep problems, extra
snacks and hot drinks are always available.

Unfortunately, a 5 day course costs £230 (accompanying personal carers
£115). I can only tell you that in my opinion it is the best value for
money in the world - but I am biased !!
