Some big words in my new book :-)

I started reading a new (to me) P. D. James (Adam Dalgliesh) novel last
night called /Private Patient/.
In the first few chapters I have had to refer to my dictionary 4 times to
look up words unknown to me, or which I had forgotten
I mean to say, how often do *minatory*, *cicatrice*, *solipsistic* and
*palimpsest* crop up in everyday conversation? :-)

I read a book once by some famous author ( too many years ago to remember
who ) and never read another 'cos while the story was good there were too
many fancy words. As I read before going to sleep it meant I found myself
waking during the night wondering about the words.

I knew cicatrice as I had a share in a racehorse called Cicatrix. The
vet suggested that name for him as he was scarred from several
operations and accidents before he even saw a racecourse. He could catch
pigeons in the morning but did not like to make an effort in the
afternoon. After four races we gave him away to be a Hunter.
