After Boo's delightful post the other day thought I'd start a thread and
see what we get :-)

When I was a babe at granddaddies's knee he taught me

Oh the sun shines bright on Charlie Chaplin
His boots are cracking
For want of blacking
And his little baggy trousers they want mending
Before we send him
To the Dardanelles

Now I didn't get that last word so I regularly sang

Before we sent him to the garden end

Now I did wonder why he needed to black his shoes and mend his trousers
just to go to the end of the garden

To the tune of Red Wing, a song having a dig at Charlie Chaplin for not
enlisting;

Now the moon shines bright on Charlie Chaplin
He's going barmy to join the army
But his old baggy trousers they'll need mending
Before they send him to the Dardanelles

The moon shines bright on Charlie Chaplin
His shoes are cracking, for want of blacking
And his baggy khaki trousers still need mending
Before they send him to the Dardanelles.

I worked in a band with a singer who mangled lyrics hysterically due to
mis-hearing them on the radio. This resulted in him singing complete
gibberish much of the time.
His version of Me And Bobbie McGee was a classic but his Gentle on My
Mind conjured mystical visions of tinkers, soup ladles and fondled breasts.
The joys of AM radio before the internet supplied all the lyrics you
could possibly require.

:-)

Booette 1 came home from school when she was about 5 and told me that
it was such a shame for Monica. As far as I was aware there was no
child of that name in the whole school. Took a while to get her to
explain that poor Monica was broken and they sang about her in
assembly.
Then I explained that the words were actually "Morning has broken"

Good one. I remeber Bunny 2 coming home and saying they had been singing a
hymn about our new baby. Couldn't think what it would be until she sang
Oh Lee, Oh Lee, Oh Lee, Lord God Almighty

Hee hee, I like that one (and yes, I do know the song and the proper words)

Dandelions will inherit the world :-)

At school they tried to drum some interest in E.Lit via Longfellow's
'Hiawatha'

Other methods of torture were also tried. We transposed the first line into
:-
"By the shore of itchy goolies"
