Go to - Start - Programmes - Accessories - System Tools and system
restore is listed - click on that which takes you to the systerm restore
page.
You need to click in the circle next to Restore My Computer to an
earlier time.
Then click next - and you will see what to do

System restore won't restore missing or deleted files unless it's OS or
application based, you need a special program for personal data.

If you've over-written a file then you can use previous versions (under
properties somewhere) depending on OS.

How to in XP:

What type of files are missing?
System Restore only backs up vital Windows system files

Users data files such as .docs spreadsheets and similar stuff and
anything in "My documents" etc are not restored.

Assuming you know the file names (all or part), then you need to search
everywhere, not just in 'My documents'. They may have been
inadvertently saved to another location altogether.

How many files are missing? What type of files and were they in a
sub-folder of 'My docs'. If so, were they all in the same sub-folder?
Also, what version of Windows?

OK. I would search the complete system - all hard drives - initially
using the sub-folder names as the basis for the search (one at a time,
obviously). If no joy then you need to search for each file
individually.

I'm a bit confused because you say that you think only two files are
missing but later on you say 'Excel, Publisher and some Word', so that
sounds like more than two.

I take it you don't have a back-up?

Do I search in the same way Michaelangelo ?

But choose a different option on the drop down list

In case you have accidentally deleted them beyond your recycle bin, there's
a nice free program from Piriform (producers of CCleaner and Defraggler)
called recuva that will recover them for you.
http://www.piriform.com/recuva/download Works for me

Good luck. I have it installed on both desktop and netbook, but haven't
needed to use it in anger as yet. Have tested it and pulled back some jpegs
I had long forgotten. Didn't need them but the test showed that it does
work quite well. Unfortunately if the file was deleted a long time ago
the chances are that some or most of it may have been overwritten, then it
really does appear to be non-recoverable.

Been out, Jen, I'm just back. Choose 'All files and folders' from the
drop down search list and in the next box enter the folder name in the
top space, even though it says 'All or part of the file name'.

I've never liked the Windows search tool very much. I prefer a program
called Agent Ransack. Just type in the name of the file or a piece of text
from it and it will find if it's on you computer.

Just a thought Jen,

Open Excel and click on File - at the bottom of the drop down menu
should be the last work you did, if what you have lost is one of them
click on it and see if it opens - if it does it is still on your
computer.

Do the same in Publisher and Word

Wish you luck

Thanks Anita it shows 4 options at the bottom but none of them are the files
I have lost.

I have lost 2 folders, both containing mixed files (ie., Excell, Word and
Pubisher)

I hadn't come across Agent Ransack before, Mike. I've just installed it
to try it out. It'll definitely be staying on my machine. I can't get
over how blisteringly fast it is compared to the Windows search. It's
like comparing Jensen Button to Mr Bean. :)

Thanks for the recommendation.

I'm puzzled. Running a clone backup program such as dilobits 'in sync'
doesn't involve time consumption because it runs automatically in the
background and takes only a few seconds to execute a complete clone
backup of a logical drive.

In Sync from www.dillobits.com is not a perfect disk cloning
program. Few that run under Windows are, but it does do a reasonably
efficient job of providing a backup of all essential system files, as
I'm sure do most of the backup programs used by others.

For true disc cloning, that is the creation of perfect copies of a disk
including partition status duplication so that the created clone disc
can be used to boot up and install the OS is a little more problematic.
Symantec's Ghost gets around the problem of host OS dependency by
booting from its own operating system and using that for the cloning
process. I believe later versions of Ghost use some form of disc
cacheing but I've no idea how well they work.

As James said, the perfect bootable clone for Windows is difficult to
achieve due to the hardware dependancies of Windows. If your PC crashed
and burned, booting a new one from the clone would probably fail as the
hardware components will be different.
I've use Norton Ghost and wasn't impressed. It failed to boot a new PC
and finding files within a 500Gb clone was a nightmare.
There must be some AutoBackup applications for Windows, doesn't W7 have
something now?
Once an intial backup of the home folder, including documents, pictures,
sound files etc., has been done, the backup utility only backs up files
that have been changed since the last run. That will take a few seconds
for most people and runs in the background at pre determined intervals.
And should save to a separate disk, ideally outside of the PC.

Backing up applications, while seemingly desirable, is probably a waste
of time.

I use this for everyday backups and free. One can just access the
back-up files and open them in their original format.

http://www.fbackup.com/

I do an image with this (not free).

http://www.macrium.com/

Windows 7 will do an image and a boot-up disc as well.
