Who, me?

I have a few digital photos that are irritating me in their frames as
they are a few degrees out of true vertical or horizontal. When I say 'a
few' I mean no more than 5 degrees.

I have GIMP on my (Linux) PC and can adjust them to be 'true' but
whenever I try to save the image it ignores the slight rotation I've made
and saves it (renamed) in its original slightly off true form.

What am I doing wrong please?

I suppose I could simply adjust them in their frames behind their masks
but I'd prefer to adjust the actual image so they can be printed at A3 or
even A2 (approx) sizes.

Straighten your pic, take a screen grab and save that.

A screen grab doesn't give a high enough resolution for printing later.

Thanks Oliver. I had a look and that is OK for flipping or rotating 90
degrees.

I'm using Tools/Transform Tools/Rotate which allows incremental rotations
and its this that won't save. I *think* it must be something to do with
layering but just cant figure it out.

I have never used Gimp but just a suggestion.
Is there a "Flatten Image" or "Flatten and Crop" command that you
could use to get rid of any unwanted layers, leaving just the rotated
layer?

There is but it still wont save the rotated image.

The nearest I can get to saving is by using a different app (Shotwell)
but this creates a file that can only be reopened in Shotwell which isn't
helpful if I want to print to anything larger than A4.

I'm continuing to try different apps.....

How odd!
You are using "Export" and NOT "Save", aren't you?

Nope - none of the apps will save the 3degree rotation! I think I'll go
back to PlanZ and simply rotate the print slightly behind the mask and
then frame it.

Very strange, such a basic operation.
I've just tried it in Affinity Photo and no problems, so if PlanZ
fails I will do the job for you if you forward the pic to me.
Reply-To: is valid.

I've just loaded a jpg into Gimp, rotated it slightly, exported it and
the rotation was duly saved.

Using Tools/Transform Tools/Rotate I rotated it using the 'arrows' and
then hit the 'Rotate' button to fix the rotation before exporting.

Not sure if that helps - if not I've no idea!

Thanks Boggy. I'll retrace my steps again tomorrow and follow how you
did it. I *thought* I was doing the same but am wondering if I missed
out something somewhere and by tomorrow I'll have forgotten just what I
did today!

I wonder if you hit the rotate button before doing the rotation?
I think in the absence of knowledge of how Gimp works, that is what I
would have done.

I tried it just now using Gimp for Windows. Rotated a jpg about 20
degrees using "arbitrary" rotate. Then used Export to save as JPG so
that it overwrote the original file. The new version has kept the rotation.

I hit the rotate button after doing the rotation.

By the way, going View > Flip & Rotate > Other Rotation, doesn't save
the rotation when Exported to another file.
But Image > Transform > Arbitrary Rotation does save the rotation when
Exported.

It worked! I was obviously doing something wrong somewhere down the line
but have now copied your instructions into a file for future use.

Thank you to all who offered suggestions.

Pleased it's worked for you.
It might be an idea to print the location of that file on the back of
the photo.
